petit fours are basically a mini cake. They are usually square, with some sort of filling. Covered in a ganache type, pourable, icing. Do a search in the galleries, i'm pretty sure there are some pics there.

They are tiny cakes that can be cut with cookie cutters in different shapes, then covered with pour icing... which is icing very thin poured over it. Then you can do some simple decorations on them...

here is a link to some petit fours made to look like little gift packages...

the options are endless... icon_biggrin.gif

I have made a few orders and to me, they are a pain. Now I know why the bakeries charge $12 - $15 a dozen.

petit fours are indeed a pain. to make them slightly less painful to ice (poured liquid fondant in several layers), you can first cover them with marzipan or almond paste or even rolled fondant (though not tasty) -- basically you roll out the marzipan to cover the cake before cutting into pieces, so that each of your pieces has a smooth top. you should also be using a very dense cake, to minimize crumbs.
