Yes and no.  I live in a military community.  The majority of my military customers can't afford more than what I charge.  Off the military base I live in a very small city.  Most of the town wouldn't ever spend that much on a cake. If I lived elsewhere I would've charged more than what I did! The motorcycle cake was around $400 to make.  I was happy with the profit I made.  The jet cake was around $150 to make and I was also happy with that.  I do charge around $4 per serving here in Sumter, SC.  I'm also one of the more "expensive" cake decorators and I'm often asked why I do that to people who can't afford me.  I always explain that it's a CUSTOM cake and anything custom made is expensive.  Still, people have trouble understanding that.

Strawberry curd? Gotta try that!

What size is the cake? Is that buttercream or fondant background?

Thank you! It's an 11x15 cake. The background is fondant, and the green hill is fondant.

It's never "just cake!"

You may get a cake for $way to little but you won't get this cake!

Me too, $114 for detailed fondant.

What is strawberry curd?

Beginners, be sure to parrot advice and get your post count up as fast as you can. After all, it's not what you know, it's what people THINK you know.

It's made with strawberries, sugar, lemon juice and corn starch. Though I bet it could be made like lemon curd, with eggs.

Yes it can :) I make all my curds with the same recipe, I just replace all but 1 tablespoon of the the lemon juice with whatever fruit/berry I want to use. It's an egg curd recipe.

Hello everyone :) I've been trying to read a bunch of threads these past few days since joining. What AMAZING work you all do! I made these cakes today as a gift for my cousin's baby shower and was wondering what any of you would charge for something like this. It is a 6 inch 8 inch and 10 inch, each double layer and 4 inches high. I JUST started branching out beyond family for making cakes and want to be competitive in price to other bakers around me. The top and bottom tiers are chocolate cake with ganache filling and the middle tier is vanilla cake with buttercream filling. covered in marshmallow fondant. the decorations are all fondant also.

Please read some pricing threads and read Jason Kraft's pricing formula

I just quoted $550 for this (Or trade for built in cabinets) It uses 1 1/2 Wasc (3 boxes) recipes. 2 RKT batches, 3 batches of modeling chcoclate...also requiresflanging PVc to a wooden board. If we do it I will bill him normally for the cake and he will invoice me normal price for his work. I hope I get it. Ifso I will letyou all know what it actually cost in hours and ingredients.  The original baker put up instructions and encourages people to duplicate it and post their results on her FBpage. I have not see anyone try yet...

What are the dimensions? Just looking at it, I'm thinking closer to $800-1000 unless its smaller than I think.
