I'm just after some quick (HONEST!) opinions - do you think my cakes would look better if I start putting ribbon around the cake boards?
I've always been a little reluctant to add ribbon, because I figure if they're not applied perfectly, or matched perfectly (which means a trip to the craft store for each cake = more running around), then they'll make a cake look worse, not better. So I always cover the boards with fondant, but never bother with ribbon. Do they look slightly unfinished without it? Feel free to be ruthlessly honest!

I think your cakes are nice enough that no one would even notice whether you have ribbon or not. You do very nice work!!!!
hi if you put fondant in the base i think it will look better with the ribbon is just a nice touch it make it look better in some of my cakes i use the nice silver paper like that i dont worry about the ribbon but you should put the ribbon on it
I always think the ribbon finishes out a cake. That doesn't mean I always have it but when I do have it I think it looks better. I've started keeping white, black and brown ribbon on hand. That covers most of my cakes.
I think ribbon looks so nice on cakes... alothough I don't do it for the same reason as you, too much running around to find the perfect color
I think your cakes look great without it. If you have the ribbon, then sure it finishes it out. Maybe just start keeping your eye open for different styles of ribbon when they are on clearance or sale, and start adding to your cake supplies. Then you will have some on hand, and can start playing with it to see if you prefer it or not?
Yeah...ribbon is just another one of those 'caking' items that I have my eyes open for when I am out and about shopping. I use a lot of ribbon and would not dream of providing a cake on a board wiothout it. But thats just my philosophy. Do what feel right to you - if it doesn't bother you, why bother doing it?
One thing that I found is that florist ribbon (the plastic stuff that comes in every colour) is great to use around cake boards as its waterproof and you can split it to whatever width you want. no need to break the bank, you can get 100 yards for under $5!

Good idea! I already have some florist ribbon I use for gift-wrapping. Hadn't thought of using it on cake.
Hey Evoir, I've just been admiring all your cakes. I love the Peter Rabbit cake, your painting on it is beautiful. Did you use Clickstix for the lettering on that one?...it's a nicer font than the most similar one in Tappits. I have 'Groovy' Clickstix and love using them, so much easier.

I think from memory I used Patchwork letter cutters for Peter Rabbit. Each letter is about 35mm high (??) The cake was quite large so it needed larger lettering. I did get a bunch of Windsor Clickstix recently too and used the funky ones on a recent 21st cake (the overly colourful one)...I enjoyed using them! Much quicker to cut out letters and pop them out.
