So I'm going to be making a cake for my friend who is turning 30. It's a surprise, and I'm low on ideas. She is an amazing woman of many layers. I've been trying to come up with ideas, which is usually easy for me. This lady is not all that into flowers, or girly stuff, so purse cake wouldn't work. The sleek modern look isn't really her either. Hobbies...no, not really.

She's tough, gentle...most of all she's a mom of 3. Her kids are her reason for being. So I was thinking I could do a fondant cake and have her kids "paint" on it with some pre-chosen luster paints that work well together, then add some white flowers or something.

Has anyone out there ever done this? I'd love to see some pictures of perhaps what to expect.

I think that would be a fabulous idea. Maybe put hand prints on the cake in lustre dust or food colour paint.

Maybe you could make some fondant plaques, or cut out shapes, and have them paint on those instead, then add them to the cake. Several reasons. I'm imagining kids that age poking holes and tearing the fondant. Also, she could could pull the plaques off and keep them for a while.

Lovely's idea about the hands is a good one. You could make cutouts of the kids hands with the fondant,, then let them paint those. If you put food coloring all over their hands, it will stain and she will know your surprise.

As far as painting, maybe get the food coloring markers for the to use instead. I know some young kids than will paint every color right on top of the other and just make black.

You could make little fondant easels to put some of the plaques on, then put the others around the side of the cake, maybe alternating with the handprints.

I LOVE that idea! Now I want that for my next birthday. My kids always want to decorate for me and I wind up giving them fondant and let them have at it. I really like the idea of them painting the cake so much more.

Thanks guys!! I think I'm going to let them paint the cake, limiting their color choices to pastel luster paints.

I love the idea of the hand prints. I think I will have them hand stamp some gumpaste with luster paints and then cut them out, put them on sticks and dry. Those will make a great topper and keepsake.

I'm not too worried about them damaging the cake, she won't care, and I can stick a flower over anything.
