I had someone contact me today wanting a cheap cake to serve her guests because she already paid for a really expensive cake from someone else and she only wants to serve that cake to her family at the party. HUH!!!!!!
I declined the order because I didn't think that it was appropriate for me to make a cake that would be next someone else's cake. I also really wanted to tell if you want a cheap cake then got to the commissary (military grocery store). I didn't, I was polite and courteous.
Am I making a too big of a deal here? I would just like to know some of your thoughts. Thanks.
Absolutely decline this, why would anybody want to make a "cheap" cake and have their name ruined. Unless you mean a "simple" cake where yours would taste awesome and just be less decorated. It maybe risky though, like a taste competition. It would be a bummer to have the less decorated and the least liked flavorwise too. I think you did the right thing.
I also think you did the right thing she should have never even told you about the other cake she should have just said I need a very simple cake and and gave you her price range some people!!!!
"I'm sorry, you must have dialed a wrong number. My cakes don't look or taste 'cheap' and are therefore not priced that way. I think you wanted one of those places that sells months old mass produced cakes."
Indydebi, I always love reading your comments. They always make me laugh but in a totally good way. Thanks for brightening up my evening.

hahaha, so well said!
I believe the customer wanted a less expensive cake, I would have provided her pricing on my cakes. If she ordered then I would have made certain my cake was flawless in taste and looks (no matter how simple), this experience could have gained you a great customer for life.
I would be insulted too. Why would she assume you would make her a cheap cake if the other baker wouldn't? Some people.
Haha, I don't think I could have stopped myself from saying something akin to Debi's comment... I might have been able to suggest something later, once I'd stopped laughing but on the spur of the moment, the smartalec comes out first.
"Ahh, cheap cakes are down the hall on the left, this is good cakes here, good luck! click..."

Yup, a cheap-ass one - no thanks!
I'd be insulted if I was the guest at that party. They have a fancy, expensive cake that they plan to only serve to family and everyone else gets "cheap cake". WTH, I'd take my gift and leave personally. People are so stupid.
"Lady there ain't no such thing as cheap cake outside of a grocery store! Well there is an alternative...here's a cake mix, a 13x9 pan and a can of frosting with some sprinkles. Have at it, and have a nice day." hehehe
