I am still learning how to decorate cakes but have been asked to make cakes by family, friends, etc. I'm really stuck on how much I should charge for what I've done. I feel guilty taking too much money as i'm not a professional. The cake I have just made is a Hello Kitty one and is in my photo's (couldn't get the photo to upload to the forum) and I was hoping for some opinions on what you think I should charge. I'm in the UK.

I'm sure you've read about selling copyrighted characters before... Hello Kitty falls into that category, so you can't duplicate the image to sell without permission from the copyright owner.

You could make a generic cake and let the customer purchase and place a plastic character or candle of the character on the cake.

BTW, if the Hello Kitty tiered cake in your photos is a 12 x 10 x 8 and serves 118--don't sell it for $75.00--that's only .64 cents per serving... similar pricing might have been current in the '50s or '60s (before my time, IDK), but that's way too cheap! IMO, it's worth at least $4.50 per serving for fondant... $531.00 minimum. (if you are in business, don't do it if it's not profitable.)

seriously...is this a joke? All the cakes I saw in your photos look professional to me. You can charge PRO prices which should start at min of 3.50 per slice or MORE! Your cakes are awesome so keep up the great work and charge accordingly.

Thanks CWR41 for that information about the copyright. I didn't actually realise that about the copyright for figures that I had made, I assumed it was only for printed edible images. Am going to have to rethink my idea of starting a business then as most people ask for a cake with a character on nowadays

The sizes of the cakes were 10", 8" and 6".
