I have my first unique request. I have a customer celebrating there boyfriend getting off of probation. She is holding a suprise party for him. I am just so clueless on this one. I can only come up with handcuffs for the top maybe??. She said light humor is okay but I don't want to take it to far. She also said she is serving around 25 people. If you have any suggestions or even pics to get an idea that would be great. She didn't give any specific colors either. I'm pretty sure she is just as clueless as I am.

i am intrigues on what creative ideas everyone else will come up with. im always afraid of using humor in anything, in fear of offending people.... and while i think its a very 'unique' situation and type of party, im not sure how 'unique' the cake could be without potentially offending the clients boyfriend. hmmm. this is a good thing to ponder tonight while i relax in the tub!

You could make a cake look like sky with a bird flying and say "Free as a Bird." LOL! Actually, you just might want to do something cheerful and colorful. Good luck!!!

Hmm....Maybe have a bird in stripes flying from his cage? And a girly birdy waiting?

Both takes on "free as a bird" are cute to me. Some little hearted version of the "theme".icon_smile.gif Good luck.

I did a probation cake once, actually!

And yup, I used the saying "Free as a bird".

Oh I like the free as a bird idea! Much more cheerful and happy than open handcuffs. I was thinking a two tiered round cake. Maybe I could do the bottom tier look like jail bars and the second be clouds. On the top have the one bird in stripes and the other be the female bird waiting. Does that sound like a good idea?? You guys are all very helpful thank you. I am a new cake decorator and just opened a home based Cakery and this website has been very inspiring. Everyone here is so willing to help

How about the "Get out of Jail Free" card from Monopoly? Or a ball and chain with the cuff broken open?

I did the Monopoly Get Out of Jail Free card a long time ago, but if you search "Parole" or "Jail" there have been a few done to help give you ideas.

What does he want to do in the future? Does he have a job? Not that I have any specific ideas to offer but maybe put something that is looking forward to a great/new future and leaving the past behind?

I can't help but think of the cake in Back to the Future for Uncle Jailbird Joey.

Of course that was for parole, not probation. I should learn the difference.

I'd just do a welcome home cake.

That's exactly what I was thinking! When I read the topic, the little guy from monopoly was the first thing that came to mind.

I immediately thought of Monopoly "Get out of Jail" card. Maybe after you decide on a theme, run it by the client just to make sure you get them what they want.

Parole doesn't mean he's been in jail and is now free, though he might have been in jail before his parole. You could ask before you do anything with a jail or freedom theme.

In my opinion though, I would just avoid having any theme at all. Just make it a nice generic celebration cake. At most, I would incorporate things like birds and sun. But I think a surprise end-of-probation party has all sorts of potential to backfire on the girl. The boyfriend could be embarrassed just at the thought of the party itself. He may be wanting to forget about whatever caused the probation and doesn't want people reminded of it. Not that there's anything you can do about that. But you can keep out of making it worse by just doing a neutral cake.

How does a bird cage with a bird on top of it in flight sound? Also in ribbon it will say *Free as a Bird* With an antique key next to the cage.
