I just need to rant. i made a cake for a friends birthday with figures on, took it to our meal and gave it to the staff. when they brought it out 1 of the figures was completly gone! when i asked about it the manager said that "it just broke" and "it was dry" well duh figures are dry! he tried to make out that it was badly made and we should talk to the decorator, he was shocked when i said that i was the decorator...

I told him that the figures managed to survive me walking the cake in heels on the ice and a long drive. he never gave a proper explanation, wouldnt give us any part of the figure and didnt even say sorry! he just kept saying it was too dry. someone must have messed about with it! the birthday girl had not seen the cake before, i feel like i wasted my time! i will never trust anyone with my cakes again! sorry for the long rant.

Sorry this happened to you! I made a cake for a bridal shower once and someone damaged it prior to it being put out (no one owned up to it).

That would infuriate me too! I hope you took a photo of it? I wish I had something constructive to say to you, but there's nothing you can do. I just wanted you to know I would be livid as well, and I hope you told the restaurant person you would never go back there due to his attitude. I guess he never gave it back to you because he had already thrown it away, arrogant dork!

That had to be so frustrating and maddening for you, I'm sorry. The fact that he wouldn't tell you what happened or show you the pieces makes me think someone was messing around. I mean, sometimes things break no matter how careful you think you're being, it happens, but refusal to even explain sounds scandalous. Its frustrating enough as it is, but then for him to bag on your work, of course not knowing it was YOURS. GRRR!!

Sounds like some workers were messing with it..you know...the "Is it really made of frosting?" syndrome. Grrr.

Or someone took it to put on a cake of their own. Sounds sketchy - especially since he wouldn't even give you the broken pieces.

Thanks everyone, i just cant belive his attidude. i got photos luckily. however we cant say that we will never go back there as its the birthday girls place of work! which makes the whole thing worse really, you would think he would care as its an employe!!

I was busy sculpting and he walked over, grabbed a hold of a piece Id just finished and squeezed it. His big, fat thumb left a big, fat indention in the fondant and I had to throw it away. Then he blamed ME. My fondant was too soft, it shouldnt have been that soft, he worked with fondant all the time in culinary school blah blah blah. Idiot.

I too am very sorry this happened to you. I'd ask the restaurant for some sort of compensation; free meal, gift card toward next meal (since you know you'll be back there), something. If you had bought the cake at a bakery, you'd be out cash, not to mention it harming the party atmosphere, etc. If your friend didn't work there, I'd suggest writing to corp. headquarters and let them handle it.

You know, people make mistakes and do stupid things, but I never stop being shocked by someone who will do something completely ignorant and then instead of just apologizing, will start trying to find a way to make it YOUR fault!! Ok, like I would show you a Kleenex as if it were some amazing creation I learned how to make by going to an expensive decorating class held by a famous caker? Duh?

I made a Harley cake for my nephew's birthday party and he was so excited, he told his friend to go look at it. Well, friend thought the cake was actually some sort of Harley cake cover and that the actual cake was underneath it, so he tried to grab it around the sides and pick it up! (Helloooo fingers sinking into airbrushed black buttercream and the white coming through! Hehe!) Now, at that point, I was a little miffed, but he was so aplogetic and polite that I was able to just laugh it off and it became a friendly joke between us. If he had been a jerk about it, I'd not have taken it so well.

I'm so sorry that happened to you! It totally sucks and there's not too much that can be done about it. The first time I took a cake to a restaurant for a party was at a restaurant I used to work at. I went in to tell them we had a rather large group and the hosts went off to push some tables together. As I was waiting the manager came up and chatted with me a bit. He peeked at the cake, said it looked awesome, coolio. Then he asks if I want them to keep the cake in the back for the dinner. I had never heard any horror stories before, and I know he has a very professional staff, but something told me to hang onto it. It was just a 6 inch cake so I said I would hang onto it, but thanks. I had stuck a hand made anemone flower to the side of the cake and didn't want it jostled too much.

I don't know, just something about me not being able to keep an eye on the cake unnerves me. Unless of course I'm not at the party, the whatever. If anything happens it on them. But if I'm there, I kinda feel like I'm babysitting the cake until it gets cut!

The one thing that keeps sticking with me is the part about them not showing the broken piece, not producing it. That just makes me feel that someone wanted it for a cake for themselves and simply kept it.

I don't think people realize how much work we put into cakes...

I totally understand..I made a cake for a friends birthday and she took it to a restaraunt and they put it in the fridge but some staff decided to throw bags of lettuce on top of it and broke some of the decorations and smudged the icing..I was really mad and so was the birthday girl...

Aw, that's just disappointing and even more so that adults just can't fess up to making a mistake. Sorry that it happened.

It happens so much to me. It's aggravating. When transporting my wedding cake, my dad said it was inevitable to put a finger in it and I'd just have to touch it up at the church. It was more the matter-of-fact, this is how it has to be manner it was said in that was so aggravating. People transport cakes all the time without messups but my dad clearly knows more than I do about it.

And then my poor papa, love him to death. Transported the cake 3 hours home, survived 2 days at my parents' house and then another very hilly transport to my grandpa's house only to have him drop buns on top of it.

I really would not be this upset if he had just said sorry instead of bieng so rude! i know mistakes happen, but you say sorry! have spoken to the owners sister, (who i know well)she says its the 2nd cake he has broken! and if he carrys on being rude etc he will be sacked in january! yay!

I guess we were lucky 2 years for my husbands 40th birthday. We went to Outback, they took the cake and took excellent care of it, and us, and brought it out in perfect condition. I made a 2 tier cake (for 6 people), just to give him the effect he would want to have with the big cake. So after we had our piece we gave the rest to the restaurant staff because of the excellent service we had gotten all night. And believe me, we weren't the only birthday there that night, we must have been the 10th ones to get their cake while we were there, and there were more after us. They really loved that, and from what we understand, the cake was gone in no time at all, and yet, everyone there came over to wish my husband happy birthday and to thank him for sharing his cake.

The way I look at it is that the cake was so lovely and the figurine was so absolutely beautiful and perfect, that someone (or many) couldn't help themselves and took it to put on their own cake. It was the talk of the party and it was so wonderful that the perp took it home and feels guilty (but sends a prayer of thanks) to you for having done such a wonderful, exquisite piece of art!

i recently made the teal cheetah/zebra cake in my photos for my sisters bday at a restaurant. i was wearing heels so i had my bf carry in the cake ahead of me. by the time i walked in i saw my wonderful creation being carried away to the kitchen! i was so upset that he had just handed it over knowing how much hard work i had put into it =( i was also upset (and i know this may sound a little odd, lol sorry!) because the cake wouldn't be at our table all night for everyone in the restaurant to admire heehee! i mean i did put hours of work into it, i would like to have had it shown off a bit i was worried all night about the cake but luckily when the waiter brought it out it was just fine =D

i'm so sorry this happened to you, i know i spent the entire evening planning out how i would chew out the waiter/manager if my cake had been damaged! i guess this is usually why its easier for us to hand over our creations the the client and be done with it =D
