Hi there, I was wondering if anyone here was going to attend the THAT TAKES THE CAKE show in Austin this year?

I've entered into a couple local cake contests with a local cake club, but have never entered into an actual CAKE SHOW/COMPETITION. I don't feel that I have enough skill or maybe I'm just a little apprehensive.

Does anyone here thats competed have any advice for a newbie to the cake show world?

Hi there! I'm attending and entering the show, although it will be my first live competition and it's very scary but also so very exciting. I've only entered a few online competitions before, this past Halloween, so I have no idea what to expect at a big live show like this.

I'm just an artist that started making cakes as a hobby this past August (2010) and I'm entering the showcake category with miniscule experience with cakes so I probably don't have a chance but I decided "what the heck, you only live once" so I'm going for it for the whole experience and to see what it's like.

Also, live in the Dallas area and haven't been to Austin in a long time so taking my husband along for a little mini-vacation and to hit up Stubb's BBQ icon_smile.gif

I'd like to second the asking for any advice to a newbie!

I've never been to any cake show so this will be a lot of firsts for me but it sounds fun. That's a great link to that Competition Hints thread, thank you! I just found this page with hints for traveling with cake to competitions:

http://oksugarartshow.com/tips_for_traveling_to_cake_shows.htm

A lot of good info for a newb like me icon_smile.gif and I plan to spend lots of time over the next few days that I have off of work to read that Competition Hints thread. I have no idea if I will like being in a show/competition like this but I guess I will find out! And have fun doing it I hope icon_smile.gif and meet new people that are as interested and passionate about cakes as I have become over the course of the last several months!

And the vendors! I've warned my husband already icon_wink.gif

Do ya'll think I stand a chance in the amatuer contest for Taste the Cakes Convention here in Austin? Ive never participated before, and I've never been trained either, no classes. Just tried to create with tips I find online. Please take a look at my photos. Thanks.

At this point I intend to compete in this show. We love Austin so my husband and I are thinking about making mini-vacation out of it too. I am already working on my tasting competition cake. My coworkers will eat anything so I have no qualms about trying out new recipes.
I have a great design in my head I would like to try but it uses a brand that is trademarked so I am worried about that. I would use cake dummies because they feel safer to me. If I decide to compete in the decorating competitions then I have got to order my supplies pdq.

Do you have it all planned out already?
