A bride asked for a cake to serve 80 guests. I might also mention the bride is my hair stylist, so I decided to give her some extra cake to help make her day special. The final cake was enough for 100 guests, excluding the top tier.

Now, here is the rip. The top tier was boxed up for the bride/groom, but somehow the guests actually got into the box and ate the cake...leaving an empty box with a few crumbs. Of course no one knows how this happened. The bride was devastated since she didn't have her anniversary tier. Has anyone else had this happen?

No, never had this happened but you should be very proud. Your cake is so yummy they want to eat it all up icon_biggrin.gif

Wow what a bunch if rude people! What I would do is remake the top tier for them. But that is just me. I have never heard of the guests getting into a boxed up cake. Wow

I felt bad for her so I did just that. I made another top tier and delivered it to her. I couldn't believe the guests were that rude. Everyone knows the top tier is for the bride/groom.

Never had that happen either. You could offer to make another top tier that they could freeze now, or you could offer to make an anniversary cake for them next year. A good number of brides are now opting to serve the entire cake at the wedding and then order a freshly made anniversary cake. Just a couple of suggestions that you could offer to the bride. I think it's awful that her guests were rude. If I were her, I'd be quite upset, too.

At my wedding, I stuck my head into the kitchen to see if some guests could get more cake and I saw the kitchen staff eating my cake... Or should I say finishing my cake since there was no more for the guests. icon_evil.gif

I have the mini tier cake pans and give the bride a coupon for their 1st Anniversary for a free mini duplicate of the wedding cake for orders over $500. Orders under $500 get a coupon for half-price on the mini cake duplicate.

I just be sure and tell her to please notify me at least 2 weeks in advance of anniversary just in case I something happens to my calendar and I forget the date.

That stinks. For my clients, I make them a fresh 6" cake for their anniversary for free, so they eat the top tier anyways on the wedding cakes I make.

I think thats awful! It was very sweet of you to make another cake for the couple. Loucinda has a great idea too! Saving that top tier in the freezer for a year is pretty yucky. My daughter and her husband just celebrated their 1st year anniversary, and the darn cake top is still in my freezer! I told them they had to pick it up and eat at least a bite of it. I'm still waiting! lol.

after some of the stories i've heard on here this was my first thought too, that it was the staff at the place not the guest that got into the box. i've heard of venues cutting the slices of cake 1/2 of the wilton standard just so there is a tier or more left for the staff to eat (then they get a peice that is 2-3times the normal size)

My parents ate my top tier! Being that in their culture it is not tradition to save the cake they thought it was just extra, so when we got back from out honeymoon it was all gone! My husband (who is american) poor guy never got to try the cake during the reception so offcorse he was very mad, I don't blame him icon_sad.gif I do plan on making a replica on my next anniversary (6th!) since we no longer live in the same state.

I agree Leily. The last wedding I was invited to that I made the cake there should have been like 30 extra servings. I did each tier a different flavor. They placed a couple (like 3 pieces) as leftovers on the cake table (white with raspberry). The bride said to one of the waiters I want some cake and they said oh no theres none left, but oh wait there is some red velvet in the back. I think they were saving it for them! Next time I deliver at the venue, which I do alot of weddings there I am going to make them leftover cupcakes so they lay off the cake, lol!

All the more reason(s) that I shake my head and wonder WHY cakes are whisked away to be cut in secret instead of right out in the open. On another thread, where the matre de (sp?) was peeling the fondant off and throwing on the floor ..... wouldn't have happened if the cake was cut out in the open!

And I've got to ask where everyone finds these venues where the staff "eats all the cake"?? I've NEVER had that happen and never HEARD of that happening around here.

But again ... if the cake was cut in the open and not in a secret back room, the staff couldn't stand around and eat it without being seen.

i'll never understand that custom. never.

After reading about rude behavior from wait staffs, it seems like a good idea for brides to INSIST that their cakes be cut in front of the guests. (Especially of there is a cutting/plating fee.) No secret meeting place for cake-cutting!

agreed...I've done banquet serving and we never got to eat any cakes icon_sad.gif Maybe some leftover food..but that was way after everyone was finished, and had seconds..
