Just wondering if there are other ways to color fondant. I make MMF and then I just add the color in once the fondant is prepared. icon_biggrin.gif

It depends... You can get a deeper color if you dye it before you add in the powder sugar. OR if you dye it after you have added the PS than it will be harder to get a deep color, you will have more of a pastel color. I usually add in before PS because it is easier to tweek it and get the color you need. The other option is to use precolored fondant and you can mix other precolored fondants together to get whatever you want. I've done this before as well, like while trying to get a burgundy I added a tad of black to red and it worked perfectly!!

all the fondant on my cakes in my pics is MMF. I just make it up, slap on some gloves and color it after its made. The colors also deepen after they sit. But it isnt difficult.

I put the color in after the MM's are melted before I add the PS. If I need more colors then I wait until it's completely made. I love being able to make a whole batch one color - it's soooo much easier icon_smile.gif

It's definately easier to add the color before adding the ps. But I never need a whole batch of one color. Last weekend I cut my recipe in half and colored small batches like that. It was actually quicker to make several small batches than one big batch and kneading in the colors.

when i need smaller amounts i use a 1cup marshmallow recipe, just enough for a color.

Adding color to the melted marshmallows BEFORE ps is the only way i make it, it's just SOOOO O much easier.

I also add my color before adding the powdered sugar.I've found it makes black turn out alot nicer, too.

Buy it precolored. I'm not being cheeky, but that is the easiest way, especially for red, black, dark...anything.

yeah tiny goose, I'd agree. except, I live in a town where the cake deco supplies we can buy are powdered colouring and gel colouring. Seriously, not even moulds or cutters or premade fondant. Only plastic icing premade. So we have to be very resourceful.

If I need a large amount of one color, I color it before adding the powdered sugar. (Sooooo easy.) If I'm working with smaller amounts of different colors, I do it afterwards which isn't hard, just a little more time-consuming. icon_wink.gif

what type of colors do you use? I am making a gift box cake and have liquid gel and paste colors. Should I use different types for the fondant for the bow and the fondant for covering the cake? I also heard someone mention somewhere mixing in glucose to the fondant to get the bow to harden sooner. Anyone know anything about that? Sorry if I hijacked your post mommytolucas. icon_smile.gif

personally i hate the taste of premade fondant. No matter the brand. And its so much cheaper to make it! I also add my coloring to the marshmallows prior to adding the powder sugar. But if you dont it just takes a little more time and muscle to add the coloring after

leily, I'm told by a lady with 20 odd yrs experience you can color with edible chalk?? Worth a try. In South africa all our board chalk is edible (in case of kiddies getting hungry in school)
