The last couple of times that I have coloured fondant with colour paste it just falls to pieces when I roll it, and seems quite wet. I added more icing sugar but it did not make any differance. It was impossible to work with.
I did put in more colour paste than I normally do to get a rich colour, but deffinatly not a dark colour, I wanted a medium blue. So I had to throw it away and use a light blue which worked.
Has anybody any idea why this happens and can it be salvaged?
How do you get this colour if you can not use so much paste?

If your fondant is crumbling like that then you're definitely adding too much color. A way to avoid this is to add powdered coloring to the wet mixture if you're making your own fondant. You can deepen the color later with liquid gel food coloring without having to add too much. A cheap way of doing this from what I've heard is to use unsweetened Kool-Aid packets. It has the added bonus of flavoring your fondant a fruity flavor if you like that sort of thing. There is also regular powdered food coloring at alot of online cake suppliers.
If you don't make your own, you pretty much have a choice of buying pre-colored or airbrushing. Hope this helps you. Take care

Hi Cardicard, i'm from the UK too and often have this problem when adding dark coloured pastes (dark blue, dark green and black). Don't know why this happens, but it can sometimes be rectified by kneading in some trex / white flora.

I did do this and even added a couple of drops of glycerine, I think it had gone to far to save. Thanks.
