Our last two deliveries for the day on Saturday ended HORRIBLY. They were both wedding cake orders. In route to the last deliveries, my delivery guy was hit and dragged by an 18 wheeler, the cakes were all damaged. My guy is OK, thank god, but he has a broken ankle.
I was left with two options, make new cakes or not deliver anything, the latter was not an option. Thank the lord, I had extra cakes made. The first client should have received a four tier, buttercream, scrolled pattern, instead, I was only able to give her a three tier, fondant covered, cake with scroll work. This all happened an hour before the wedding was to start, we were an hour and a half late to this wedding. The client was FURIOUS, as should have been.
The last client cake was an hour late, but because there cake was smaller and simple, I was able to give them exactly what they wanted. They were understanding and made me feel a little better.
I still sick to my stomach!!!!!
I think you should feel great about what you were able to do. This was an ACCIDENT that was outside of your control, and sounds like it could have been catastrophic! Luckily you were not the injured party, because they could have been left with nothing as you were rushed to the hospital! Kudos to you for being able to put something together for them under the circumstances...late or otherwise. Well wishes to your delivery person...

Sounds like you recovered as well as could be expected, and better than most, given the short time-frame! Wish your bride could have been a little more understanding. Glad your driver was not seriously injured.
So sorry this happend to you and your staff. One cannot predict these types of accidents. Fortunately you were able to provide cakes for both weddings -- considering the circumstances that was no small feat in itself! Pat yourself on the back for getting through a horrendous day.
Furious? Wow, they didn't even show any compassion, that your driver could have lost his life. Those 18 wheelers are really scary, to drive beside, let alone get hit by one. I'm just happy he is okay.
To each their own in the attitude department. If you were able to call the venue for the upset bride & give them a head's up & she still acted that way, well I sure hope she enjoys her honeymoon!!!!! (that's me with an attitude) NOW if you WERE NOT able to give them a head's up (for whatever reason) then I hope that she sees her attitude wasn't necessary & calls after the honeymoon to apologize to you for something that your driver, you & heck even SHE couldn't control.
I'm VERY glad that your employee was able to walk away with only minor injuries. As I have worked for my parent's wrecker service, vans, cars, & pick-ups VS semi, rarely end good, PLEASE PLEASE forget about the bride & be thankful for your drivers good luck.

She shouldn't have been furious if she knew the circumstances. If she did, shame on her for only thinking about herself. If she didn't, she should be made aware of them. This will help her understand and feel lucky that she even got a cake. There are many who wouldn't have handled this situation as well as you did! You should pat yourself on the back for being wonderful and professional!!

That is terrible! Cake- be it a wedding cake is not THAT important. What if it was one of her guests in an accident with an 18 wheeler- would she have held a grudge for them not making it to her wedding? I can hear it now "You RSVPed and everything! We paid for you to come- I don't care if you were in the hospital! It was MY DAY!!!" Wow!
Glad your driver is okay- please don't waste your time or energy on the first bride.
She should think herself lucky you rose to the occasion and made sure she had a cake at all - selfish s*d!! For heaven's sake, don't offer any recompense - you should be patting yourself on the back for what you were able to come up with given the awful circumstances xxx

I know exactly the sick feeling you are talking about. Delivering a cake, I was also crashed into. The backside of the cake was all cracked and damaged. I had to stop at Michaels and but emergency items....with noi coupon! I spent $40+.
I couldnt re do the cake because we were half way there and the place was far, plus Miami traffic adds extra travel time. We were about 1.5 hours late. I didnt charge for for delivery or the remaining balance of the cake. I pretty much gave her the cake!
Luckily, we were all ok.
Wow, sounds like the bride was have temper tantrum. Kind of like when a five year old doesn't get what she wants. Sounds like she has absolutely no compassion or understanding. She needs to grow up and start living in the real world. And in the real world, accidents do happen, and that was a horrible thing to happen to your driver. I am glad that he is ok. As far as I am concerned, she was lucky to even get a cake considering the circumstances. You went well beyond the call of duty for that bride. Don't let it get you down.

I am thinking with the first case there has to be compensation . You should feel good about being able to provide something. That is what makes you the professional. And the better person. She should be less of a bridezilla. have some compassion but at the same time - you were late and did not deliver what she ordered. Are you refunding at all?
Does your insurance cover damage to product that was in the vehicle during the accident? If it does, then refund the bride before she gets back from her honeymoon and starts demanding it. It's great that you were able to provide a cake even after the accident, but I don't agree with the PP's saying that she shouldn't get anything back...you worked a miracle for her and she doesn't realize it, but she still didn't get what she ordered and paid for, and it was an hour late.
I hope your driver will be okay. I broke my leg right above the ankle a couple years ago and it still hurts.

I'd say the client should be thrilled you were able to do anything at all! Your delivery guy got hit by a truck and you still delivered a cake! That is amazing!
I cannot believe that the first party was not more forgiving...I mean your delivery guy could of been killed! You still provided a cake...I think you did a great job considering the circumstance!!

I'm SO glad your delivery guy is okay! My mom was killed in an accident with a semi-flatbed so to get off with a broken ankle is SO great (although its NOT good it happened at all). How scary...yikes. (Hm that didn't come out so good...you know what I mean, right!!!!)
Hopefully the bride will get over it!!!! Maybe your insurance will cover the cost of the cakes, like someone else said, so you can also afford to give partial refunds or even a full one to the first bride, although her attitude is terrible. Someone almost died to get her cake to her!!!! Surely she can appreciate that...

Actually, there is a story on www.etiquettehell.com about this very thing. A guest was involved in an accident and was lifelined (!) to the hospital. Bride called guest while she was in the hospital and told guest that was no excuse for missing her wedding and by the way the guest still owed her a present.
I just don't put anything past 'em anymore. As unbelieveable as it gets, there's always a story out there somewhere to top it.

You are to be commended for even being able to produce two cakes. You must really ROCK !!
Also sounds like you need a new clause to your contract.. Not responsible for acts out of my control. I will work with you to come up with a solution but sometimes sh!t happens. 
I think you should be VERY PROUD of what you were able to give them. My God, most people could not have pulled that off.
Congrats on a very good save. To bad the couple was not understanding...accidents DO happen. That is why they call them accidents.
