Wow! Hilary Duff's Wedding Cake...i Love It!

I am just laughing with my husband because he said that she did not have enough money to get a beautiful cake hahaha...sorry I had to share
I'm torn. I kinda don't like it. This cake needs a good baker, but certainly not a decorator. It looks unfinished.
On the other hand, I kinda like it, but I don't think it was executed well. I like that the frosting has texture, but I agree that it should all be the same thickness. That pitiful little layer of frosting on the top tier looks so sad. Same for the top layer of frosting on the middle tier....Looks like someone swiped some with their finger. And finally, I'd like to see the whole thing lifted above the flowers surrounding it. Since the flowers cover one of the layers on the bottom section, it looks off balance to me.
And like someone else asked, how would you keep it from drying out?? Maybe it was brushed with simple syrup?....although it doesn't look like it was.
But like it or not, I hope this doesn't become a trend. I don't think it will.
I don't love that cake, but I did love the Martha Stewart version...http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3006/2697281039_e1798d1005.jpg?v=0
I have a need for things to look even and neat!
And what do you all think? Would this be possible to pull off without it drying out? I think I read somewhere that you could brush the sides with something, maybe a fruit glaze? I might have an experiment in my future!
now that is a wedding cake I could do ....don't need any more talent than being able to level the cake layers. Not much impressed with it.

I think the Martha version is prettier...more fun with the different colors. At least it looks like there was some design thought put into it. But she even cut the crust off the sides. That thing would dry out in 10 minutes! Talk about customer complaints! They must be brushed with something, although it really doesn't look like it.

I agree cakefairy, I hope she didn't pay much for this cake! Marth's cake looks like there was thought put into it not so for the other one!
I can't say I'm a fan of this cake either. I like the idea, but agree that it wasn't executed well at all!
Wow!!! It looks nake!!! I guess we are so use to seeing cakes fully decorated.
I couldnt do that! I would want to finish it off....before they took it.
I love it! I think its a perfect example of the new trend taking place in the cake world! Its simple, yet modern and classy, however, without all of the flowers it would be quite dull so I would say the flowers are a must. But the new cake trend is definitely moving towards a modern, simple look. All of the frills of wedding cakes in the past, while beautiful and many brides/decorators love that look, it is quite outdated. But I love her cake! I think it was a great idea!
You all better not love it tooooo much.....If this trend catches on, it'll turn this job from heavy decorating (which most cakers love to do) to mostly baking (which is the boring part for many cakers). We're about to "love" ourselves right out of a job! Nope....I say we'd better hate this cake and hate it BIG time!
I like it... although I've seen it done much better than this... So I'm not crazy about HD's, but I love the idea when it's done right...
(Actually, I've taken several pics of what I call my "naked cakes" because I think they are pretty like this... )

The Martha Stewart version was very pretty, but the one in the OP could use some improving. Maybe if someone used an Agbay and cut it into many thin, very even layers. That would help with the moisture issue too, because apricot gel can be brushed between each layer as well as the filling and then the cake would not be dry at all. Just think, 12- 1/4 inch layers with contrasting filling, tall tiers and some complimentary flowers- very pretty! I like simplicity, but it has to be done PERFECT or it looks cheap. I have spent more time as a professional baker than a decorator though. I can look at a plate of perfectly baked, evenly portioned chocolate chip cookies and think it's pretty, lol!
I don't like it at all. It could be done much mucccch better. I don't know if it's shading or a shadow, but the top tier looks darker around the edges than the others.
Cut that crusty edge off... split each cake in 2. Much better. Even with the rustic frosting coming out between the layers it would have looked so much more finished, formal and crisp.
Honestly, as others have said as well, it looks slapped together without any thought.
Does anyone know who did the cake?? Hope it wasn't one of my decorating heroes!! LOL
Maybe they served it with a friut sauce? I would think it would be very dried out, otherwise. I love a simple cake, but this one does just look unfinished, to my eye. The Martha Stewart one is nice.
I don't like it. For the same reason I'm not a huge fan of carved cakes. It looks cool (as in, different) but when it comes to actually serving and eating, that's when things get a little sketchy. I have done some carved cakes, but they are not my favorite because when it comes time to cut and serve, how do you get a nice, even, easy to eat, presentable slice? I see this one drying out. Who wants a cake with a dry crusty edge?
I can understand the rustic homemade look. But I would suggest smearing and swirling the frosting instead. Decorate it with some chocolate dipped fruit. Beautiful. Delicious. I don't like having to sacrifice flavor for a wow effect.
Makes me want to dip into a big ol' bowl of sicky-sweet, wonderful buttercream with a large spoon.
I kind of like the casual, homemade look. I love homestyle iced wedding cakes with flowers.
I only would worry about the drying out of the cake. Like, I love that "layered" strawberry shortcake look but I never do it because I'm worried about the cake going stale.
I always think its interesting in this forum what cake snobs we can be. haha. Seems like every time someone famous gets married, this forum absolutely picks apart their wedding cake. haha. I thought Chelsea's was lovely (and I'm not necessarily a fan of her personally, and the cake wasn't my style) and I think this cake is lovely and I'm sure it went with her wedding theme. And cake is a human thing...things will be slightly uneven and there will be imperfections....sometimes photography is a bigger thing than cake...just like photography can make people look better than life, sometimes photography can make cakes look better than life too! So we grow to expect too much from professional cakes when, by chance, the photo forgets to hide a human imperfection.
Eh. I should get off the soapbox. I just thought I'd stop in and see all the complaints the newest celebrity wedding cake brought in. LOL. *Light hearted meaning, not fighting*
I must admit that while it's not my style, I can appreciate the idea of it. This is the 2nd celebrity cake I've seen like this....trying to remember the other I saw. I think it would look better with thinner layers and therefore, more buttercream layers also.
Speaking of Chelsea's cake.....totally LOVED it!
My first thought when I seen this cake was: "WOW, that's gonna put the decorators out of business!"
My second thought was: We wouldn't even consider pushing fresh flowers into icing on a cake so why is it ok to lay them on top of an un-iced cake?
How is that food safe? Unless of course, someone washed all those flowers! I'm guessing NOT!
The cake was done by Fantasy Frostings out of California. (I guess the fantasy of this cake is that you have to imagine the frosting.)
They do absolutely gorgeous work....this just isn't one of my favorites. I don't think "rugged" or "natural" has to mean "not neat." Like I said earlier, I appreciate the idea, but I think it could have been much cleaner and still looked rustic. Really, my biggest criticism is the uneven thickness of the filling.
Say, isn't there a rule on CC against posting pics without frosting? Seems I read that somewhere. Now I know why!
I don't like it either. And I wouldn't have much fun making a cake like this because all the fun decorating parts are left out.
I personally do not like this cake. It looks like it is unfinished - like a dress that hasn't been hemmed or pressed. however, this must be what the bride wanted so it's her day and I'm glad she got what she asked for I guess!
Ugly cake. A bad version of the one offered by Maisie Fantaisie in London. It's in one of her books. Maisie's doesn't look unfinished, ugly, or anything like that.
