Has anybody else noticed a significant rise in butter and egg prices in their area?

Where I live butter has gone up $.66 a pound and that is at the big discount place like a BJ's or Costco. At my local grocer the high end butter went up $.20 per pound and even their house brand went up $.20 a pound.

Eggs have gone from 1.48 for 18 to 2.08 for 18. I can't tell you how much they went up that the big discount place because I don't buy eggs in 5 dozen packages. I don't use that many to justify the price.

I keep waiting for flour to go up due to Russia putting a ban on exporting wheat. So far it hasn't. But everything else still has.

So has anybody else seen an increase? This is going to kill my fledgling little business before I even get a chance to make any kind of start. I'm thinking this may be where you see the tipping point in the cupcake losing its trendy spot. It's going to cost too much to make them from scratch.

Thoughts?

I have noticed a HUGE increase. Butter, just a few months ago was regularly 1.50 a lb at my wm and sometimes on sale for .99 a lb (I would buy 60 lbs at a clip when it went on sale like this since I use smbc and scratch butter based cakes exclusively)

Now butter at am is 2.78 a lb icon_surprised.gif and eggs were 2.76 this morning at the local grocery store!!!!

I have actually already raised my prices for my 2011 brides since I am booking through june already just so I dont lose too much money if prices go up again after I already have contracted at a particular price.

wow that's cheap. Up here even I'm still expecting to pay between 3.99$ for generic to 4.99$ for the high end at the stores. Costco is maybe a dollar cheaper. Our giant 50lb bags of flour we get wholesale have gone up almost 8-10 bucks in the past 2 years.

I agree. Food costs in Canada seem to be much higher than compared to the US. I wonder why? Lol - although butter has been what I consider "on sale" at the Real Canadian Wholesale Club and at Walmart - $2.97 for a lb of butter!

It happens here too, and I'm on the other side of the planet. Unsalted butter increased with 12% last month icon_eek.gif which isn't good for my cake budget. And I just saw yesterday that cream has risen too, thought not as much.

As another poster mentioned, I too am waiting for flour to increase due to Russia's band. I'm seriously considering hoarding now birthday.gif

Eggs remain constant in price at the moment here in Germany, but butter has gone up considerably - it is now arouund $2.68 for a metric pound. Ugh. Interestingly milk and other milk products did not go up or only slightly.

My Sysco guy told me everything is going to go up again, so be ready. Its from this salmonella thing with the eggs. He told me its even going to affect the cost of chicken and beef just because. The price of sugar has gone up so high, I was buying a few 50 lb bags at Sams the other day and the clerk even went when they saw the total "Wow, all you bought was SUGAR! You should have a few fillets in the basket too for that amount!"

It is a delimmia to explain this to customers, isn't it?

There are many excellent vegan cake and cupcake recipe available online (just do a google search for "vegan cake recipe"), we used a trial and error method and took elements from the best tasting recipes to come up with our own proprietary recipes.

Here' a good starting point:
http://www.instructables.com/id/The-BEST-chococlate-cake-ever...that-happens-to-be/

Vegan cake recipes tend to use baking soda and vinegar to replace eggs and non-dairy margarine instead of butter. For things like cookies you can use potato starch as an egg replacer, a company called Ener-G makes one:
http://www.ener-g.com/store/detail.aspx?section=8&cat=8&id=97

I've had a lifelong allergy to eggs (as well as nuts) so I'm used to dealing with substitutes. Vegan cakes and cupcakes tend to be denser than cakes made with eggs, but our customers tell us that people don't even know it's vegan until you tell them.

Have you noticed it isn't just the butter and eggs, but all the dairy: milk has been going up, cream cheese, sour cream, etc. Cake mixes (well, PB) went up almost 20%. Funny thing, at my store powdered sugar has actually gone down, a lot.
I am hesitant to raise my prices because I already get grief from some about how high they are, but I think it just needs to be done. Plus, I don't think I am really all that high, just catering to the wrong clientele. icon_smile.gif

I thought cream cheese went up. The thing is it went up after the very first time I bought a big 6-pack box, so I thought I was imagining the numbers. I just checked my records and indeed it had gone up first a few weeks ago.

I just crunched some more numbers on eggs. What an eye opener. The Big box place near me charges 7.79 for 5 dozen grade A eggs. I can get a package of 18 Grade AA eggs at my high end grocer for 2.08. That works out for a penny less at my high end for a better quality egg. Granted the difference between AA and A is only age an should work fine for baking. But if I buy it and it sits in my fridge, how long before Grade A goes to Grade B. I would rather buy Grade AA and let it go down to grade A, then the former.

If you haven't done so, do your math before you shop. What seems expensive, isn't.

On the other hand after calculating, my red velvet is now costing .07 cents more to make. On top of I have to supply the carrier, that I can only find for 60 cents a carrier, I am not making money. I need to find another place for cupcake carriers and fast!

Everything is going up up and up. My food bill is through the roof. I spend more on food a month then any other bill. And that includes my mortgage. And there is only 4 of us.

last call

Butter 3.99
milk 3.09 (full fat)
eggs 3.49/18
Cr Ch 1.49 for 8oz block
powdered sugar 1.99 2lbs store brand
2.08 2lbs dominos

Of course you can still get things on sale from time to time.

Oh and on a side note I gave up my BJs membership cause it was costing me more to shop there then watching the sales at the local grocery.

I noticed butter went up but haven't paid attention to the others. I just raised prices a few months ago - may need to rethink and go up more icon_sad.gif
