Hey all my cake decorating friends! I need some help with a wedding cake (my first real one!) that I'm doing for a co-worker this weekend! She wants a 9" round 7" tall single tier cake, covered in fondant. She also wants the fondant to have vertical lines on around the sides, kinda like the effect you could get with those decorating combs used on buttercream. My question is on how I can get that effect on the fondant- should I wait till it's on the cake to use an indented roller? or will that squish out all the frosting from the bottom, leaving me with a big mess? I don't generally use fondant for my cakes so I'm a little nervous about messing up on this! Also, how naive would I be to try and do 7" of cake without a cardboard/wooden dowels to support the height of the cake? TIA!

I did a cake a couple days ago that was an 8" round 7" tall cake. I crumb coated the night before and all was well until i put final layer of frosting on the nexts day, turned my back on it to make some fondant decor, turned back around and the cake started to droop! It just squated under the pressure. I have never had this problem with traditional 2 layer cake. So, next time I will use support!
