Hi all,

I've done several cakes with fondant and I just did my first wedding cake. It turned out beautifully, but I had some trouble putting on the fondant. I'm just wondering what the best way is to apply fondant to the cake after it's been frosted with buttercream? I was taught to put the cake on something that will hold it up so the fondant is floating when you try and smooth it down and then trim off the excess, but I've also seen people do it on a flat surface. I tried this on a round cake and it didn't turn out so well. I had better luck with the floating method, but it's definitely not perfect. I was just looking for some suggestions from the seasoned pros out there icon_smile.gif I would like to get a more refined, clean cut look to my fondant cakes.

Thanks!!!!

Hi Rebekah

have you had a look at the youtube tutorials

they are really helpful if you want to see how someone does it. I always use fondant with bc underneath. I ice them on a flat surface as find it easier to work the pleats out and get it smooth then I use smoothers and cut off the excess after. If you are putting them on individual cake boards I lift them up then trim the excess off round the edge or for larger I put them on a turntable to finish them off. I find it easier on a flat
Hope this helps

Thanks! I didn't realize there were Youtube videos that show how to do it. I'm basically doing it the same way...I guess I just need to practice to get better.
