Suggestions For Medusa Snakes??
Decorating By cakemama2010 Updated 29 Aug 2010 , 12:14am by cakemama2010
I'll be making Medusa (just her head) for a 12 year old boy's birthday party (don't ask...everyone has to wear a toga, too!) My fear is that the snakes will be too heavy and ruin the cake OR fall out (and ruin the cake). The cake will be covered in buttercream...anyone have any tips for what I should use for the snakes (the kids will want to eat them) and how to attach without a problem? Thank you!!
Since your cake is gonna be buttercream and not fondant, I would say make the snakes in varying poses out of rice krispy treats which are attached to/through dowel rods(better support), then cover them in fondant or candy clay. Then you will be able to just pop them around and on the cake. Might use foam core or thicken cardboards to pop the sticks through if need be.
There was an awesome Medusa cake at the ICES convention this year. I have no idea who made it so I certainly am not taking credit for it but here is a photo that might give you some inspiration.

Trying to add the photo and it won't attach. You can pm me if you'd like to see the photo. Sorry.

What about using modeling chocolate or fondant on wires? It will be thinner and lighter than using cereal treats, and still edible.
Just a thought. With all the halloween stuff out, my Michaels has long gummie bear snakes for sale. They are pretty realistic. Could work.
hmmm...that's a thought casme re: gummy worms. I'll have to go see what they look like. Thanks for all the replies!
