Sorry if this has been asked before. What is the difference between the pearl dust and luster dust? I did a search and am having trouble, all it brings up is a bunch of threads that dont pertain to what I was looking for. I went to Hobby Lobby and they did not have any luster dust only the pearl. I am trying to do the fondant leaves. Will this be ok or should I order from the global sugar site? Is their luster dust edible? Thank you so much for your time.

I've never heard of pearl dust so it must be an American thing. Our lustre dust in England is edible.

I get mine from a company called Cake Craft.

Okay so from the sounds of it you are asking about Wilton's Pearl dust vs other brands. I don't know why Wilton named them as they did because it does cause confusion.

When you are looking at other brands pearl dust is the iridescent dust that is white or pearly. It can have undertons of colors but it has the look of a pearl to it.

Luster dusts are dusts that are colored and have a shimmer to them. You have the metalic tones like silver, gold and bronze, but they also come in hundreds of other colors like the pinks, blues and greens and so on.

So to me Wilton's white pearl dust would be like traditional pearl dusts, and the rest of their colors are what I would consider luster dusts. Now the bonus to Wilton's dusts is that they are FDA approved and are edible, where as alot of of the other dusts out there are considered non toxic which isn't exactly the same thing as edible. Think glue, it is non toxic which means it shouldn't hurt you if you eat it, but it isn't really made for consumption.

If u want ur leaves to look realistic tho, you need a petal dust, not lustre or pearl.

lol, its an expensive hobby to get into. and although you can get good results using just one shade of green, you do get better if you use a couple, either in layers or blending them. (and if your doing ivys or some other grrenery, they can have pink/ red/ purple tones too!)

I have Wilton's silver and gold pearl dust and also have CK's silver and gold but I still can't get the right "paint" consistency or color when mixing with a little vodka in order to get it to look like real silver or gold like I see on other cakes. I bought the CK's because I thought it was different and would make a difference. Any suggestions as to how to get it to go on to look like real shiny silver and gold instead of a pearlized tint? Should it be thick with very little vidka? I see people making cakes with what look like metal grommets for example, I want to acheive the same look but don't know how. Thanks.

AIf you're coloring your fondant or buttercream a gold then use a gold gel dye also in the fondant/buttercream it will help inhance the luster dust. Or if silver tones use a pale blue/light grey colored fondant and then the luster dust/vodka xx good luck <3
