Cake Leveller - Omg What A Mess!

I have the basic wilton leveller - always been fine but no good for larger cakes. Then it broke in mid cake! Ordered bigger Wilton leveller - OMG I have just levelled - well thought I had - a large choc cake. took off the uneven top and I've got a huge dip in the middle!! arrrggghhh was so bad couldn't even put it back together. Now my cake is slimmer it was the only thing I could do. Now i'm stuck - smaller one is good but no good for large cakes - large one is useless!! very frustrated and annoyed with cake that supposed to be iced tonight!
I used the wilton small leveler for years. Yes even on larger cakes. If you come at each side of the larger cakes, just as far as the level will let you, after you have scored the cake all around then take some unflavored dental floss and wrap it around where you have scored. Pull each end of floss, like you are choking your cake and it will cut right through.
I agree, the large one is garbage! Someone needs to make one that actually works!
they do:

thanks for the tips and leah for the thread. The dental floss is a good tip. I'd love the agbay but woo pricey but it could go on the birthday/christmas list i think this year. the wilton blade on the large is just so flexible it moves mid cake and you just don't see it till its too late. Would not have faith in that ever again!
I'm just a hobby baker, and invested in the Agbay anyway ... let me tell you, it has saved me HOURS of aggravation and has been completely worth every cent. I've used it for a hundred cakes or so, so think of it as just a buck or two per cake. And it takes me all of ten minutes to level all the cakes involved in a three-tiered double-layered torted cake ... imagine how long that would take with a Wilton leveler! And every layer is perfect!!!
HTH!
ooo that sounds amazing, thanks for the info. I think i would like to invest in this then so things are perfect every time. Is it very big or hard to store?
emiyeric speaks the truth. The Agbay makes your cakes perfectly level, perfectly torted every cake every time. Yes, it's a big tool and it needs to sit or lay flat. makes no difference if it's a little difficult to store. it's worth it. totally, absolutley worth it.

And there is hardly a crumb to show for it.. clean cuts!
Yikes,,,,I just bought the large wilton one that folds in half for storage,is that the one that is garbage?
I have dealt with so many broken/uneven/unlevel cakes with the Wilton leveler - both small and large! The large one ALWAYS cuts my cakes unevenly. I finally broke down today and ordered the Agbay. I can't wait to try it
I see that fat dadio ( from goldas kitchen) has a leveler and i was wondering if any one has tried them . and if they are worth it or not because I too am in the market for one but really don't want to buy wilton if it really that bad.
Doug, I love your profile pic by the way. Cute dog. "She" (I can't remember if its a girl or a boy) looks smart too! Lol!

you will not be sorry, its worth EVERY cent!!!
leveling was always the biggest job, now it takes a few minutes to level enough layers for a 3 tier cake!
