I had my first wedding cake this weekend. I try to have all my cakes completly finished the the night before the day before....(cake due on sat I perfer to have it finished by thursday night)...Luckily I was on track with my goal because 11:30 thursday night I dropped my 12inch chocolate tier right on the floor while putting it into the box. I was fortunate enough to have all day friday to rebake/re crumbcoat and re_ice. Then there were a few little hiccups on the way to the venue saturday but fortunatly I was able to fix them as well. Used SPS for the first time and I was very happy with it.
Here is a link to the finished cake...was too worked up to take any when the cake fell.

Wow!! your cake looks lovely. You would never know the drama that happened before. I try to have my cakes also finished the day before. takes the stress out.
Good for you to do things ahead of time I also like to have my cakes ready at least 24 hours before they're due...'just in case'. Your cake is very pretty. I delivered one yesterday that looked very similar...only mine had pink ribbon and no feathers. I dropped and broke my digital camera so I haven't been able to take pictures of a cake in over two weeks.
I dropped my first cake last Monday. It was a Mt. Dew can cake for my nephew and I dropped it on my way out the door to take it to my sister in law. I had a lot of time invested in that cake and had no time to make another one. I had baked another cake when I made that one so I iced it covered it with fondant and put a fondant bow (already had one made) on top. I know he was probably disappointed but thank God it wasn't a wedding cake or something. I cried for a good 20 minutes because of it....LOL.....I have never had something like that happen to me and I felt so bad that I wasn't able to give my nephew the cake that he wanted. My sister in law sent me three or four text throughout the day telling me how much they loved the cake and it was "ok" that he didn't get the cake that he had wanted. Didn't make me feel much better though.
Beautiful job on your first wedding cake!
For those of you who have done this type, how did you get the ribbon to adhere nicely to the buttercream cake? I just got an order yesterday for a cake like this, and I remember Rach having an issue with the ribbon not wanting to attach to the cake?
Mamawrobin....that just stinks. I am sure it was an awesome cake too.

YES!! it did..and it was awesome if I do say so myself I worked on that stupid cake for a week. I made the silver top and bottom a week in advance so it would dry and cutting out the logo using an x acto was quite time consuming. I was very upset to say the least
very pretty!! i always do my cakes 24 hours before too..ppl dont realize how fragile cakes can be so its good to have time for back up.!
Beautiful cake Rachie204!
Mamawrobin, Sorry to hear about your accident too...I can't imagine how heartbroken you were.

Wow, great looking cake! Nice finish on that buttercream, perfect edges!
Sorry to hear about the cake drop but it's a good reminder to leave yourself extra time! Thanks for letting us know.
p.s. try to take your cake photos without any people in the background. It'll make for a cleaner portfolio over time.
Beautiful cake....glad you had time to recreate the layer.
Mamwrobin...so sorry that your cake could not be saved....and that your camera is broken so you didn't even have a picture it!
Your cake came out beautiful, I love it!!!
Also, does anyone knows if there's a youtube video of how to assembly SPS??
Thank you Everyone....
mamawrobin~ I am so sorry. I know you must have just felt sick. I know when I dropped mine for a moment I literally thought I was dreaming and mine was just iced...I can't imagine a whole cake ready to be delivered with no time to fix it. I hope you have a better week from here on out.
Motta~Yeah I tried to take some better pictures but my camera isn't acting right and that was the best one I could pull out..I hate that it had to Mother of the groom in it. I have a kodak easy share 8.2 mp i think. Everyone else's pictures always look so much better than mine. Even if I put up a nice back drop mine aren't as detailed as others I have seen. I guess mine don't look very sharp or clear if that makes any sense. It is driving me crazy. I am curious what type of camera's everyone has. I think I am going to get a new one soon.
Rosie~ I searched for a video of the sps being used and I couldn't find one but there is a tutorial here on Cake central.
I was worried it wouldn't be as easy as the article shows but it is. Just pull the collars off, put a whole in the center of your cardboard, put the legs into the plate..center the plate and push down. Then place your cake and board onto until it locks in place.
Hold your head up because your cake turned out beautiful inspite of all your troubles.
Thank you Everyone....

I'm just so glad for you that you had time to bake another cake. Especially since it was a wedding cake. A hassle no doubt but better than if you hadn't had time to make another one. Your buttercream looks amazing. Beautiful job on that cake.
Yes...I was literally sick when I dropped that Mt. Dew cake. I sat down and cried because it was all that I could do at the moment I still don't know how I dropped it. I thought it was slipping and when I adjusted I over adjusted and it flipped right off the board.
I've also got to get a new camera. I had cheap Kodak Easy Share. I love it because of how easy it is to use. I dropped mine on the driveway and broke the LDC. I am going to get another one of those because it does take good photos and it's really easy to use. It also cost about $89.00 which is good for me since I'm bad at dropping things.
Rachie - I totally know what you mean about everyone else's pics looking great and mine are just ok. I often go onto Flickr.com to see cake photos and the nice thing is that many of the pics have info about what camera people used. I would suggest going on there to do some comparisons.
Also, I'm going to get one of those tri-fold paper screens for science fairs and place it behind my cakes to take pics. The fabric thing isn't working out for me.
Anyways, you're doing great!!!! Keep up the good work
Beautiful cake! It's smart not to wait on everything till the last minute. Even when I deliver....I like to deliver way ahead of time if possible. You never know when something will happen.
