Normally I mix up handmade buttercream to ice styrofoam prior to covering in fondant (or fondX) for faux cakes. I'm wondering if anyone knows a better way. I've heard you can just spritz the styrofoam with water, and that the fondant will stick - but I was planning to use fondX - and I'm not sure if that will work the same since it dries totally differently.

Has anyone out there successfully covered fondant (or fondX) over styrofoam with something other than frosting in between?

I'm getting ready to start this cake soooooon, so any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

You can use any fondant on the market and cover a dummy with it without putting anything under the fondant other than shortening (my preferred method because the crisco fills in small divots in the stryo and allows for easy re-positioning--an later removal--of the fondant) or water.

I know because I've done it.

yup, just did this two weeks ago and it worked like a charm. Crisco then a layer of fondant. Went on smooth and came off the same way.

Then after you're done with the dummies you can peel off the fondat and put them in the dishwaher to get the crisco off and reuse them if needed.
