For my son's 4th bday I'm planning the 3D spiderman bust cake. I've looked up different directions on this cake but I need some suggestions...

Should I use red Fondant to cover him? ...or do you think it would be better if I coated it using crusty buttercream, smoothing it with Viva papertowels and spraying him red?

I've worked with fondant but only covering smaller round or square cakes. I've never used the color spray on a cake as of yet.

Thanks for any help!

When I made the bust I did it in Buttercream Dream and used parchment to smooth. It wasn't absolutely smooth but it still looked great. I colored my frosting with red gel colors, but if I had an airbrush I would use it - it took too much color and made the frosting bitter. Hope tihs helps a bit...enjoy the cake, it's fun to make! And impressive...

thanks ladies! i think i'll airbrush it...do you remember how many cans it took? also, did you make a rice krispies head or use wig head? i'm not a fan of using non edible items in my cakes but whichever looks best will work!

I have the Kopykake Airmaster and it only used very little and I did use a wig head because I also made Spidermans City which had 3 other cakes with it

I ended up using the Wilton Red Decorator Icing and smoothing with a Viva paper towel for the outside (I filled with my regular BC). I used the styrofoam wig head on my cake...which was plenty of cake - around 50 servings.

Good luck with yours! I really liked making this one. icon_smile.gif
