I am doing a wedding cake for my soon to be sister in law and she wants something to the effect of a pretty letter S as the topper, but not some hum drum store bought one. I would like to make it out of sugar (or isomalt) but I am lacking the ideas or knowledge on how to make that idea a reality. Any help for a sugar newbie is appreciated!

You can use poured sugar to make a stunning almost glass-like topper. Your design is only limited by your imagination. Find an "S" you like, print it out ( or draw it out), put design under a silicone mat (like a silpat). Using Playdough, create a mold around the outside of your design. Make sure all edges are done. MAke your sugar, color it whatever color you like ( perhaps a little sparkle), pour into your "mold".

If you have a cricut or other electronic cutting machine it would be easy to make out of gumpaste.

The playdough acts as the sides of the mold and the silicone mat is the bottom. The poured sugar will not stick to the mat or the PlayDough. I know it seems like it won't work, believe me I was skeptical too. But I tried it and it works. You can also make an actual mold with Playdough as the bottom and sides.

You can also take print a letter S from the computer in a font that you like. Then take fondant, kneed in a generous amount ot tylose, roll it out on the thick side and let it sit for a while so it gets firm (but not so firm that it cracks - about 20 minutes.) Cut out the paper letter, use shortening as glue and stick the letter on to the fondant. Use an exacto knife to trim around the letter cutting the fondant, then peel off the paper. Let this really firm up for several days and attach it to the top of the cake with some melted chocolate and some sticks. If you check out my photos, I carved the "50" from my zebra cake using this method.

Thanks! You guys are awesome, I never heard of the play-doh mold idea. I was thinking about doing a mold but it would be way more work than I really wanted to put into it especially since I am doing this for free as my gift to my future sister in law. Thanks again!!
