I enlarged the picture and it looks very smooth. Before I did this, I thought it
was piped on but after the enlargement, I ''think'' it's painted on!!

Agreed. If you look at the side edges of the cake, it's completely razor flat...the lines are not raised at all.

i agree, hand painted, you wouldn't get as smooth edges using an airbrush.

I agree with the hand painted idea.

Could you possibly use tinted piping gel, pipe your design on wax paper and then wrap the wax paper around the cake and then smooth it?

I think I just made it more complicated than it should be.

Just paint it on. Put the cake on a turntable with a very fine paintbrush and have someone else spin it sloooowly and evenly.

That's how I did mine with buttercream. thumbs_up.gif

LindaF144 ~ I think the gel would 'mooooosh' a little too much plus I don't think it
would be 'flat' against the cake like painting. Stop trying to make life harder for
us!!! LOL icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif!!!!!

Looks like it painted on to me too... food gel color diluted with vodka...there also seems to be a little shading here and there... I think thats lightly brushed on with dust colors.

Use White Stokes piping gel which is as stiff as RI. Its clear and you can color it to whatever color you need and when it dries it will give you a great look. Bronwen uses this technique on a lot of her cakes. I saw her use it once with gold and couldnt believe how pretty it looked. So I asked her and she told me to get the white stokes piping gel. Global Sugar Art has it.

It technically can be airbrushed but you'd need some kind of stencil to keep the smooth edges but i agree it's probably hand painted

It might be painted on but I don't see why it is soooooooo important to have it perfectly smooth.
Personally I would pipe it on w/a tip 2 or if you choose to use piping gel, use an '0' or 1 - no bigger.
