Can you do it? Any special considerations?

I've done it. Make sure the base layer of buttercream is well crusted before you start to work on it. It worked well for me.

I have before. I just make sure my buttercream has crusted and then use a soft brush and a light touch.

i was wondering the same thing, my family is not big about fondant and i really like the embroidery look. I was thinking using a stiff bc to cover the cake, putting it in the fridge for a good while and then using a very soft bc to do the embroidery technique. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I have done this technique on BC, but i waited and made sure the BC had crusted well before starting to brush, also use a soft brush, I would wet the brush with some water and remove the excess so the BC being brushed would not stick to my brush. Good Luck!!

I wouldn't put the cake in the fridge because the base buttercream wouldn't crust, or if it had crusted first, it will get soft as it comes back to room temperature and cause issues while you're brushing the other buttercream.
