I have to opportunity to buy a lot full of cake pans, books/magazines, etc and was wondering if you guys thought it was a good price or should I offer 200 and see if she counters?

That is a lot of money for a lot of stuff that is likely to never be used.
In my opinion, character pans are a waste of money....so is a cake fountain since the opportunty to use one doesn't come along too often.
The rest of that stuff sounds like someone's leftovers.
I'd rather spend the money on an Agbay and a really good turntable.
I guess it would be worth what you want to pay, however, the Wilton licensed pans can not be used for anything other than personal use. Meaning if you sell cakes you can not sell any made from those pans. There are a lot of books and other items that if you really get into baking that to me (my opinion only) that are things that will just take up space. I, myself, would look at the items individually and determine a price for the items that would most benefit me.

I agree with 3GCakes and cakegrandma. I have bought several of the character pans only to find out that I couldn't use them for cakes that I sale. So, they are just sitting collecting dust in my storage. Total waste of money.
Thanks ladies. I am just a hobby baker so selling cakes isnt an option. I am still interested in the books and such so maybe I will give her a price I am willing to pay for all the books and then if she doesnt take the offer not bother with a counter.

Let me add a little bit to what I said....when I first started out I bought a lot of things I thought I'd **need**...toppers, pans, anything on clearance or with a 50% off coupon.
I have a basement full of cake junk now, toppers, pans, things with the clearance tag still on.
Mainly now, I use my round or square pans, my turntable, some gumpaste tools, very BASIC tools...much of the rest of the stuff is gimmicky and I can't even give it away!
Just trying to save you some of my grief!
If you want the books, I would look through them to see if they have instructions so you can learn how to make flowers, borders, etc. The cakes and ideas for their styling are going to be so out of date that you may end up disposing of a lot of them. I would save my money and buy current dvd's from those who are on CC or others that can teach you to do things with their expertise. I hope this has helped you decide what you should do.

Evelyn and 3GCakes thanks so much for your opinions. I think I am going to go ahead and pass up and instead go to Ft Wayne sometime and go to Country Kitchen Sweet Art and buy current dvd's and books. I appriciate all the help and so does my wallet.

I would say the essentials are a good set (Fat Daddio or Magic Line) set of cake pans in square and round. (6,8,10,12 are good sizes to start) Trust me when I say that the investment that you make in those better pans will so be worth it over the money you might save on a Wilton pan.
Set of gumpaste tools, OR get a good set of clay tools. They are pretty much the same thing and often the clay tools are a bit cheaper and these are fine to get at a Michaels or Hobby Lobby.
A good rolling pin.
A decent turntable, I got mine at oasis on sale and with a coupon code. Totally worth it for my Aztec.
I would suggest tips and bags as you need them. Its great to go out and buy a bunch of tips, but chances are you wont need most of them. I use the different size round tips the most, plus a super large star for cc swirls. Get the others as you need them.

Jayde thanks for the list. I have a set of round Magic Line pans and the first time I used one of them I was very impressed. Even cooking and it came out like a breeze. I also bought gumpaste tools when Hobby Lobby had a 40% off sale. I have a french rolling pin that I love but isnt really the best for fondant I have noticed. I am still looking into which one will work well for me. I have a Wilton turntable that is just plastic but it is working for me right now. I have lots of bags and tips.

I second the motion! This is EXACT the same advice I would have said. Go for a good turntable, a few standard pans and bags and tips as needed. Those old cookbooks don't sound very useful or worth very much money. In my area you can findthem for $1-2 a piece and buy the mif they had a few recipes you are likely to use. I usually look through one quickly and my rule of thumb is; if there are at least 4 recipes I would use, buy it.
Rather than the old books I agree is a waste, go to www.youtube.com and do a search for covering a cake in fondant , making buttercream or gumpaste flowers and so on and up comes TONS of tutorials and I find those so much more helpful. Just my opinion. I like the others have a basement FULL of garbage I have and will never use. Mainly 100 or more character pans.
As another reply, to re-iterate all that has been said previously about collecting things that you don't need...When I first discovered ebay I bought pans, books and other cake items that caught my eye. Fast forward for 4 years and when we moved back to Fl 2 years ago, I had 6, 3 ft tall and about 24" square boxes of pans alone, mostly character pans, that I never used. Now this was not counting all the boxes of pans, etc that I did use. (I had a licensed business) Oh the money I had spent and then trying to sell it all as I decided they were useless! Lost lots of money on things that just took up room!

You should probably come in lower. Remember, you are doing her a service too by taking all of this stuff at once. Otherwise, its more work for her to sell in bits and pieces.
And, as a PP eluded too, just about anything in those books can be found online for free.
I have almost everything on that list that I have collected over the last 30 years!! I don't use any of it anymore--all outdated items--cake decorating has really changed over the last 5 years. Everyone's advise about buying CURRENT items is spot on.
