A venue I deal with is requesting that I bring my cakes in on "clear or Plexiglass" cake boards. Does anyone have any idea where I could get something like that?

Did they say why? Do all the cake designers do that?

A glass company generally has plexi they can cut for you. $$$

They said they want to be able to see through to the cake stand or plateau. They said one of the other vendors brings them in like this. I priced out some plexi sheets online and you're right, cha-ching!

You know I have used clear class as a cake base but never plex-glass.....other than it not being breakable.

For the price to have it cut it scratches so easily, even if you put a board under the cake for cutting. I just had a mirror and a clear glass plate cut by a glass company in town 14" squares and it was about $40.00....not to bad....they don't scratch as easy and don't dull.....

would they sell that at local hardware stores?

I guess they just don't like that my normal boards are wider than the base of the cake and that they can't see the top of the stand. Hmmmmm, I personally like a nice cake board underneath and think it adds to the presentation of the cake, but I think I'm going to just do them on smaller boards so there's less of a border. I've never had anyone have any issue with the size of the board I use, so it is a bit strange, but they're a great venue and get me lots of business, so I need to work on something they are happy with.

Ah, it does sound like your base board is too wide, or their plateau is too small. For example, I put a 10" round on a 14'' drum, and set that on a 14" plateau.

I'm curious too. A few months ago, I delivered cupcakes to a venue where a rented plexiglass cupcake tower was provided. It was so scratched and scuffed, I was hesitant to put my cupcakes on it. Really looked bad.

You can buy already cut peices at Lowes and Home Depot but I am not sure of the sizes. They are not that expensive either.

maybe you can contact that other vendor they mentioned and see what they use?

how about getting glass table tops, HObby Lobby sells ones that are pretty thick and have a bevelled edge, still putting a cake board under the cake though to protect the glass from scratches.

You can get an already cut glass tabletop from any Michaels or Hobby Lobby and use a coupon while you are at it. I usually get the ones at HL and with the 40% off they are less than $20. They have several different sizes to choose from too.

I doubt they meant to specify plexiglass vs. acrylic (I don't even know what the difference is) if all they want is for it to be transparent. But you can go to TAP Plastics and get any size and shape you want cut from a variety of clear, non-breakable materials. And if you tell them what it's for, they can give you some good advice about the best material for the purpose. I've never found it to be expensive, though I admit I've never asked for a cake board!

You can get them from Tap Plastics. I just received mine in the mail! I can't wait to use them to ganache a cake! :)

You can get plexiglass at Lowe's and have them cut it for you. However they only cut squares or rectangles they would not cut rounds for me when I asked.
