I'm going to take a gumpaste class and since Wilton courses are my only option right now, this is where I'm headed. I know that many here do not prefer some of the Wilton products, but if you had to choose for the purposes of taking a course, which Wilton gumpaste product would you go with? If neither products are a good idea because they might frustrate me by not being able to produce good results, then tell me so.

The Wilton gumpaste that is ready to use?

Or,

The Wilton gumpaste mix?

I really don't mind having to mix anything but if the product is a waste of time, then I don't want to buy it.

Thanks
Julie

I am on my last Fondant/Gumpaste Course, and the two Wilton gumpastes are very close in price range. We had only one person in class purchase the mix, but its much easier just to buy the ready made stuff.

We used it to make carnations, fantasy flowers, daisies and also a 50/50 mix. A 50/50 mix is 50% fondant and 50% gumpaste mixed together.

I bought the mix & had horrible results. Not sure if it was my error, but after I mixed in the water it had little chunks in it that were impossible to get out. I'd buy the ready made.

I like Wilton's ready made gumpaste. I've never made my own.

I bought the powder mix and it worked out just fine for me. It even made more than the ready mix offers.

I always use the mix but the one that comes in a canister, not a bag. It always comes out perfect.

I've tried both and I greatly prefer the mix. It's cheaper and actually gives you a few ounces more than the pre-made (I checked icon_cool.gif ). It's also much softer since it will be freshly made when you use it, and is easier to work with IMO.

I have used the mix and mixed it 50/50 with fondant and it worked very well.

I definitely like the mix in the canister better...the ready made is good to use in a pinch but I find that at some of the Michaels stores around here they tend to be dried out a bit at the top and for 10.00$ I simply can't afford to waste the $$$. Besides I like that the mix is fresh.

I used the pre-made stuff the other night to make some goal posts for a stadium cake and they turned out great

I prefer the mix in the canister as well. The bag of ready made dried out something awful REALLY quickly.

I've tried both and I like the mix better. For some reason , even after adding crisco, the ready made never rolls smoothly for me and I end up with lines. everywhere.

I prefer the mix, too. It's always been perfect for me. I used the pre-made once and it worked okay, but it smelled disgusting and the texture seemed coarser.

With the mix you really have to follow the instructions. Exactly 1/4 cup water, mix, knead with enough powdered sugar so it's not sticky, let it rest at least 15 minutes wrapped tightly in plastic, then knead in 1/3 cup more powdered sugar. I let it rest overnight tightly double wrapped after that and it's perfect.
