Please? I',m such a novice that I'm getting tripped up on basic things.

I'm doing a car cake for a little boy, but the template that I'm using is going to yield a fairly small cake. My friend has also asked me to make a sheet cake to put under the car to boost the portion sizes.

I've been asked to frost the sheet cake with buttercream rather than my usual fondant. The car (slightly smaller than the 1/4 sheet cake) will sit on top. I'm worried that the buttercream on the bottom sheet cake will get really messy and squished when I put the car on top. I was planning to transport the sheet cake and the car cake seperately and then stack them when I got to the venue, so I won't have time to clean up or repair the cake.

I was thinking of putting a thin layer of fondant on the top surface of the sheet cake so that the car can sit on top. Will this work? How else can buttercream cakes be stacked without squishing, or worse, finger marks from putting the cake down?

Thanks!

I would do it just like any other tiered cake, put support in bottom cake(obvisously only where car is). I would put a board under the car and sit right on the big cake. I don't know how you are decorating the big cake but maybe some grass around it in case you goof-up alittle sitting it down and I would transport together.
