What would someone charge for a 4 inch cake (smash cake for 1 year old)?? I charge per serving but I cannot find what this size typically serves. I know it is only being served to one person so I am not sure what the proper way to calculate this would be?? Any suggestions?

I charge $25.00 for my 6 inch smash cake..I calculate you get 8 servings so 8 x $3.00 = $24.00 and I just rounded it up to an even number...I figured you would get about 4 or 5 servings at the most for a 4 inch so I would charge at least $15.00 or more...I only offer the smash cakes at this price in conjuction with a larger ordered cake for the same party otherwise I do not do just smash cakes at this price.

Thank you. She would also be ordering a larger cake so I definitely would offer a deal on the smaller cake. I was also thinking charging for 4 servings. But it seems like that may be wrong as the only the child will be eating it... but she does want it decorated in mirror image of the larger cake.

It doesn't matter whether the child will eat it or not it is how many servings that particular pan will feed so just because he/she may only eat a bite is irrelevant to you...Charge for the servings it is intended feed... icon_wink.gif

You shouldn't worry that only one child will be eating the cake. Typically at weddings not all of the cake is eaten. I made a 100 serving wedding cake for about 125 people and there was still cake left over. It wouldn't have changed how much I would have charged. You are taking the time and providing the ingredients for a decorated cake. Stick with four servings. I think that is more than fair.

I give my customers a 4" round smash cake for no charge when they order a 1st birthday cake.

I consider a 4" round-4" high to be 6 servings, however when I make the smash cakes, I only do 1 layer like these photos below

And I was kinda wondering if a free smash cake was proper etiquette... that is what I was struggling with.

I charge $5 for my smash cake. It is only one thin layer (usually about 1-2 inches baked).

i say on my website that smash cakes start at $20. they are 4 inch double layer rounds (end up being about 2-3 inches tall). i figure that b/t the baking, cooling, filling, and decorating time, i'm going to have 1-2 hours in the cake, so $20 isn't unreasonable. sometimes they are more expensive... for example, i had a woman order 2 dozen cupcakes and a smash cake for her little boy. well the cupcakes were fast and easy, yet i knew the smash cake (she wanted a monkey hanging from a tree branch, leaves, grass, etc.) would take me some time. it was small, but it had a lot of detail, so i charged her for the cupcakes plus a $35 smash cake. she said, "great!"

point of my story is, the price depends on the time i will spend on the cake. some want replicas of detailed party cake (more expensive), some want icing with dots (less expensive)...but none less than $20 and no smash cake unless they are ordering a party cake or cupcakes icon_smile.gif if someone thinks that the smash cake is too much, i say "i'll make the birthday boy or girl a complimentary iced cupcake with their initial or age for free" and they eat that up (pun intended) icon_biggrin.gif

i also offer this free if they order a cake. its less then a cup of batter in the 4" pan, and i simple decorate it to match the bigger cake. I never put fondant on the smash cake as i consider it a choking hazard for little ones.

I charge $25 for a 6" buttercream decorated smash cake and $35 for a fondant 6" smash cake. They started out as free with the large cake but people wanted so much detail on the smaller cakes so I had to start charging.

Oh no, they don't get to "pick" the design on the free smash cakes.....otherwise they would not be free here. The ones I do are VERY simple.

I do a free, lightly decorated cupcake to match. I would charge if I had to do an actual small cake, what a pain those are..
