I'm in charge of all the baking for a baby shower. We are going to have 25 kids and 25 adults (the shower is for their teacher). I've decided to make both a cake and cupcakes. I'm thinking of making either a 14" round, or a two tier with 8" on a 10". (Leaning toward the 14".) I've looked at the charts, and that will provide about half the servings I need.
So, my question is, how many cupcakes do I need? Will 24 be enough if I make the 14"?

It should be enough to feed. I would make more then 24 cup cakes only as a cautionary measure.
People like to eat pretty things and may take one of each as opposed to one only.
If you are in charge of cutting the cake then you should do fine. Each piece should be 2X2 at the max.
Cut smaller if you have to accommodate for people who want seconds.

That's only for 2" high cakes (which is the typical height of a sheet cake).
An industry-standard serving of cake is 8 cubic inches. This can be achieved by cutting 2" high cakes (sheet cakes) in 2"x2" squares (2x2x2=8 ) or cutting 4" high cakes (standard height of all non-sheet cakes) into 1"x2" rectangles (1x2x4=8 ).
6" round = 12 servings
7" round = 16 servings
8" round = 24 servings
9" round = 30 servings
10" round = 38 servings
11" round = 45 servings
12" round = 55 servings.
A two-layer 9"x13" rectangular cake = 58 servings
A single-layer 9"x13" sheet cake = 29 servings

I am making the assumption at least the kids will eat a slice of cake and a cupcake, because they did that exact thing at a fundraiser a few weeks ago. Since I'm making a chocolate cake and yellow cake cupcakes, I wanted to make sure everyone got the flavor they wanted.
And I'm not against taking home some extra cake. 
It should be interesting. I was going to make gumpaste decorations for the top of the cupcakes, but today my son saw the chocolate moulds in the baby shapes. So, we'll be making chocolate decorations for the first time. Needless to say, I will be practicing that ahead of time.
