I wish I saw this cake earlier lol. I ran into the same thing. Someone asked me to make a 4tiered stack cake for 200 people and each guest 2 slices icon_eek.gif with baby shower fondant, ganache, fresh raspberries for $80. I told him have fun at Costco... Bakery asked for $600 I asked for $200..

Ha!!!! Do these people also tell airlines that they can only spend $75 on round trip tickets to Hawaii, for their honeymoon? Do they tell the dress shop they can only spend $50 on their gown?

I'm amazed why people think it's ok to try and bargain with a bakery over the price of their cake!

I had one yesterday that wanted a complete Alice in Wonderland theme cupcake tower and cutting cake and I "needed to understand that they had a lot of other expenses, so this would need to be cheap."

I watched an episode of "Say Yes To The Dress" on TLC yesterday and this bride wanted a dress that was way out of her price range. The salesman said "cut your budget somewhere else to be able to afford the dress. You can cut budget on guest list, flowers, cake...."
Can you imagine telling a bakery that you have to cut your budget for wedding cake so that you can afford a $10,000.00 wedding gown? icon_eek.gif

I just showed my mom the post about the dragon cake. Now over the years she has a new appreciation of how much cakes cost since she helps me out. She looked at the post first and then I SLOWLY revealed the picture...she literally just sat there in silence (for a good minute!)...then shook her head icon_eek.gif and looked like that! ...people want everything for NOTHING! I'm dumbfounded...but laughing at the same time!

Sometimes that show really gets to me...

I watched an episode recently where the bride came up from Maryland w/ her whole family because she wanted a dress she'd seen on the show. She said her budget for the dress was $5,000. The dress in question was $12,000. For some reason I can't at all understand, the sales lady (who was the bride originally wearing the dress in the episode they first saw it in) went to the owners and asked them to help this client out. They applied a bunch of discounts and brought the price down to $9,900 (still nearly twice the brides original budget)...

and the bride turns to her family and said "CHECKBOOKS OUT".

She expected her family to fork over the difference so that she could have a super-expensive one wear item. I think my jaw hit the floor. There were a lot of family members there, so if they all chipped in, that would ONLY be $500 a piece, but seriously?!? And the truly shocking thing is that they all did, and they got one of them on camera saying something like "we can give up some money so she can have her dream dress". Apparently, this is where the entitlement mentality comes from... and gets encouraged.

I rented my wedding dress for $350, because I thought $800 to purchase the dress was too much to make my parents pay. I doubt my whole wedding totaled $5,000. I would never dream of taking money like that from my family members... they all have things they need or want that they have to save up for, and I wouldn't have them put those things aside for anything non-critical.

This is the cake she wanted. icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gif I told her the supplies cost over $100, and I wished her happiness. There's no way I would even entertain the thought, as much as I love doing these kind of cakes.

OMG dont you just love how ppl think you can whip it up within an hr and it shouldnt cost more than 50-100 whats the big deal they have no idea

A 1" x 1" x 1" piece of cake perhaps.

I paid $25 for my dress, Sagebrush. I still think it was perfect.

KHalstead, they certainly couldn't get 200 cake balls from ME for $150!!! I love 'em, but those little boogers take longer to make than cupcakes!! I charge a MINIMUM $1.50 per cake ball, and that's for a basic. Gourmet flavors/alcohol infused are more!

7yrrt, so was it a second hand dress or new? I can't get any kind of dress for $25 unless it's in the thrift shop.

Say...that's an idea, give them a 'gently used' cake! Only a few slices missing...only a couple smudges here and roses damaged there....used for only one wedding before... icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes, it was new. On sale, of course.

It was a floor length, short sleeved, straight skirted, ecru 'lace' dress with pale yellow ribbons crisscrossing the bodice. I wore a headpiece of pale yellow flowers woven for me by my young niece.
Just perfect for our simple garden ceremony.

Sounds lovely. I just cannot believe these brides that spend thousands of dollars on a wedding dress. Even if you can afford it...good grief.

i wore a sarong and bathing suit... but then again, i have no good taste icon_biggrin.gif

so i was thinking about this thread last night (couldnt sleep) and im wondering if the bride thinks the more i people i feed the less per slice it will be? kinda like buying 20 or 200 vases, bigger quantity usually means more discount - maybe thats where the mindset is coming from?

actually, I'd tell her she can get McDonald's apple or cherry pies 2/$1.... she'd have money left over if she got one pie for everyone... now that's cheap! Guess she can spend the rest on ice cream to go with those pies. LOL

I had a lady call me last week about making a Fancy Nancy birthday cake for her 3 and 5 yr daughters. Wanted a 5 tier cake, all fondant, but was wanting to supply all the feathers and "plastic" flowers. I asked how many people she was expecting, she said 30. I told her the cake she asked for would feed 230. She then asked if I could just make two of the tiers real and the others "fake". I quoted her the price and she said I didn't pay that much for my wedding cake! I guess there is some other sucker out there gonna make that cake. NOT ME!
