Not sure what is in your frosting, however, my cream cheese frosting did manage to crust "a little" and I mean only enough so that I could use a piece of viva and a sponge roller to smooth it a little. It was very difficult to get completely smooth.
BEFORE I let it crust though I smoothed it as much as possible with a hot spreader.

If you want to look at my pics, its the sheet cake that says ACME on it but its the second one with the falling boarder (Yes, I found that Cream Cheese is not the sturdiest of icings either).

GOOD LUCK!

When using cream cheese as an icing I found, that you can do a nice crumb coat and smooth it just enough then place it in the fridge or freezer until it firms up. Take it out of the freezer and work with a spatula to smooth out again. Now you add a second coat of icing and repeat. It's both workable and it can be smoothed out this way without it collapsing on you.
