Okay, I'm going to attempt a 3D Spongebob cake starting tomorrow. Here's what I was planning to do, let me know if there's anything I missed or if you think this will work.

Using the Durable cake recipe from heartsfire on CC, I am going to make 2 9x13 cakes and divide them in 3rds. Then stack them on top of each other with buttercream in between each layer. I was planning to insert 3 dowels in the cake.

My question is do you think I should also use some dividers to support the layers like cake board? I'm not sure if the cake will start to sag. I plan to cover the whole thing in MMF.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I was going to make one this week too but decided I won't have time.

I would definitely put dividers just like a regular tiered cake.

Good luck! Post pics when you are done.

I made a 3-d sponge bob and did add the cardboard in between with the three layers dowels on the 2 bottom layers just one down the middle and fondant your on the right track because if you are traveling with it it's good to dowel and card board it.. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks!

cakesmade4u - Need some clarification icon_redface.gif Would you put a cake board between every layer or just one in the middle ( 3 cake layers above and below)? Do you put the dowel rods thru the cake board or just above and below? Luckly, I don't have to travel with it - my son's party is at our house.

I'll add a pic when I'm finished icon_smile.gif

Just adding my two cents here...

I would recommend putting a cardboard layer between every 2 layers. That would add stability, AND make it easier to serve, come cutting time.

What I did was starting at the bottom 1st layer of cake with filling frost dowel the bottom it is going to hold all the weight of the other 2 cakes then cardboard this will also help when cutting..next layer fill frost dowel and cardboard and top layer frost all and fondant you dont have to dowel it should hold if you are not traveling if you think it needs one or 2 long dowels then add them mine did well with out the dowel if I was not traveling but I was so I put just one down the middle just in case. Not hard to make at all.

When I was making Spongebob cake, I put cardboard in middle where dark and light cake met (I hope pic will upload). I also put 3 dowels all the way from top to bottom and I think 4 dowels that supported cardboard (I was transporting cake and wanted to be sure it would survive it). It was enough and cake didn't sink at all. HTH

Ugh! So I tried to make the cake yesterday and it fell over THREE times!! Well, I made another cake and Spongebob is now laying down. My son still loves it. I plan to try again in a few weeks just for the fun of it. The pic is in my pictures if you're interested.

Thanks, KS421. At first my son was disappointed that the cake wouldn't be standing...then he saw it and loved it!

I baked two 11x15 layers. Filled the cake with a vanilla mousse, frosted in butter cream and covered with fondant. I used a melon ball tool to make the sponge holes before covering with fondant. For the legs and arms I used large pretzel rods covered in fondant and the shoes were made out of rice crispy treats covered in fondant. I did not use any dowels in my cake.
