Due to life circumstances, I've been away from caking for a few months. I was doing about two cakes per week (skipping a week here and there) between August and January of this year, but then only did one for a friend's little boy, and just haven't been able to get back into it since then.

Well, my good friend's goddaughter is turning two tomorrow, and I am making her a Hello Kitty cake. A stupid, straightforward Hello Kitty cake, that I could normally cover and decorate in two hours once the crumbcoat is on.

ARGH!!!! MY fondant has done EVERYTHING you could possibly imagine to me!!! I thought I'd pick up right back where I was before, but I feel like I've lost months of learned tricks and skills, and I've spent the last hour just trying to cover one 8-inch tier. ONE!

*Huge scream, followed by huge sigh* ...

Okay ... feeling a little better now. Stupid cake. I'll go work on the six-inch, and hopefully will breeze right through the decorating part once they're covered. Thanks for letting me vent icon_razz.gif.

Ohh! Hope the six inch goes better. Sometimes you just need to step back and relax for a few minutes!

Good luck!

i know exactly how u feel!!
I was caking on a weekly basis up until november last year when i found out i was pregnant. Well, from that point on i couldn't stand the sight or smell of cake or anything cake related. Cakecentral was my homepage on my computer and i deleted it because it made me sick to look at.

Now that the worst part of pregnancy is over and i am pumped to get back into it, everything is going wrong for me. It's crazy!!! And to top it all off, my 1 year old thinks that now is a good time to smash the door of my oven, so now i have to wait and get a new one...ho hum! icon_rolleyes.gif
Hope it gets better for you soon!

Thanks, guys icon_smile.gif. I ended up covering the things and adding the most basic decorations to it, but I need to go downstairs now and actually focus on the details. I'm fearing going back down, but the sooner I get it done, the better icon_razz.gif.
I'm just amazed at how much harder it was last night to do this than it was four months ago!!

Okay, so I finished it ... far from my best moment, but it's done. I think the biggest issue I had was the fondant itself, since my hubby actually made it for me (very sweetly, as I was on call at the hospital one night), but added a different amount of gelatin and realized it halfway through, and then tried to fix it ...

the point is, the texture was definitely off. Workable, for sure, but off. The fondant was "stretchy", pliable but very sticky, but became way too brittle if I added more powdered sugar. I usually use sugar or cornstarch to dust my work area, but it absolutely was not working, so I ended up switching to Crisco halfway through, which worked a little better ... but then the fondant was still too stretchy, and totally messed up the buttercream when applying it ... AWFUL!!!

Anyhow! It's done, certainly not my proudest accomplishemnt, but good enough for a two-year-old girl's birthday party icon_smile.gif. Yet another reminder of why I don't sell my cakes! icon_wink.gif

At least you figured out the problem and it wasn't you!

I'm sure they all loved it!
