I am really new to this cake thing and I wanted to know if there was a way to transfer a pattern (firetruck, beach ball, soccer ball) to my cake? I've seen forums on other websites, but I thought someone on here would know! Thank you!!!

Katie, I use a trick from Sharon's Sheet cake DVD - I make a copy of the picture I want to copy to the cake. Then I place picture over styrofoam and punch holes to mark the outlines of the cake. After buttercream has crusted I place hole-punched picture on cake and press lightly over holes. Lift off and outlines are marked on cake - outline and fill in with icing!!! Hope this helps!

I would trace the design onto parchment paper, flip it over, outline the pattern in piping gel, then put the piping gel down on the cake once the buttercream has crusted, then run a brush over it all, lift it up and outline and fill in with icing. I'm just a little leery about putting styrofoam on a cake I am going to serve. I just have visions of all those little pieces getting into the icing, etc. Makes for a slightly chewy texture I would imagine.

There are several ways! Have you heard of a chocolate transfer? Or a buttercream transfer? Do a couple of searches using these terms on this website. Those are my favorites. If you have a bakery near you-either free standing or in a grocery store, they may make an edible image of your pict (as long as it is not a copyrighted image, such a Thomas the train) for a small fee. Or you can go online and order an edible image to be mailed to you. You just chill them, peel them from the backing & pop them on the cake-super quick ( and therfore, often worth the $$)

Hi! What I do is similar to both Niliquely and scWMI's method. But the difference is that I trace the picture on rice paper with an edible ink marker. Next I cut around the edges and place on just applied buttercream. Then I pipe over the image.

I find it easiest to: print out the picture on regular printer paper. Trace over it w/a Sharpie on the front. Turn it over and go over the lines with black frosting. Turn over and press onto cake. Some of the frosting may stick to the paper, but it will still leave a imprint. If you'll be spraying your cake, imprint it this way first. Hope this helps.

Marie, so if I get an edible image, and have a picture I want to transfer, I just outline my image onto the edible image? It wont stick or become dry and brittle and break?

can you please explain this techinque....I'd like to try it...I always hear of others that draw directly onto edible paper and there pics come out wonderful!

tks
