What Is It With Purple This Year??

I know, I know...it's a hot color, but I have to admit to having fits with ...lavender icing, lavender gumpaste, lavender or purple on anything. That color is the reason I'm thinking of getting an airbrush--it just seems to be the "touchiest" color to get true to the food color!

And...of course, I have (on top of my many lavender and eggplant and purple weddings this year), a complete 3-tiered wedding in IMBC that they want in the darkest purple possible, solid.

How would you get IMBC almost black/eggplant purple. (not to mention the grey-purple teeth they'll all be sporting)?? Can I actually airbrush the IMBC, or do I need to make it days ahead and just DUMP the royal purple and whatever else into it to get it that super-deep purple, and hope she doesn't get it on her wedding dress??

It's the new black!

(there I said it. -- don't hit me!)

but then I do love purple -- my fav. color -- at last, if only for 1 season -- I'm in style!

I have 3 cakes on the books that either are all purple or lavendar. I am hoping it doesn't give me too much trouble. icon_sad.gif

My purple fondant for the ribbons was very spongy. I added lots of ps to firm it up.

will youhave to refridgerate the cake? whenever i have airbrushed a cake then chilled it the slightest bit of condensation causes the airbrush colour to bead up, tiny tiny beads, and it never smooths out again once the condensation evaporates. better to mix it into the icing.

yep, it will be IMBC and so it would have to be chilled in my highly humid fridge, plus it's going a long distance. dang. no airbrushing then.

I'll have to play with it ahead of time to get that dark. I love purple, but wow is it a pain in icing (for me).

Thanks guys!

p.s.--I have received 2 orders for lavender and deep, dark plum cakes, SINCE posting the original note this afternoon. Crazy. I'm going to check, but I bet a large percent of my cakes this year are some shade of purple.

I hate purple.

I can't imagine 300 or so guests all eating a dark purple/eggplant colored cake and then smiling at each other!

I just spent this week fighting with lavendar icing. Kept fading out to pink, so I airbrushed with lavender sheen and that really helped. It is still an evil color, though.

Yeah, somehow I have to figure out how to get eggplant roses?????? Lots of shades of purple this year. OH, and fuschia has been a big one this year too for my wedding orders.......I hate fuschia!

If you have problems with purple fading to gray or some other strange color, try adding just a few drops of milk to the icing. The purple will come back immediately.

And I would never airbrush purple on a cake that had to be in the fridge. It will get moisture spots on it every time! Any kind of a dark color will.

Why would someone want their guests to eat all that purple anyway. I would try talking them into just accenting with purple. Much easier on the guests!!

I always talk my brides out of having a dark colour especially black as I tell them the guests end up with black tongues and teeth, not a good look! They say "Oh I never thought of that!" and so they usually go for black accents as ramacake suggested.

I have had a run of purple for the last 2 years! I am so over it.......
Try kneading enough purple into fondant for a 3 tier cake! That stinks!

Just spent 3 hours making dark blue.......

I am buying an airbrush this year!

I was able to talk 2 of them into just doing the details in purple, but one is insisting on it being the cake color. NOT looking foreard to it.

Ramacake - thank you for the milk idea, I will definately use it. I have already purchased all the purple colors I can find....cake craft & americolor. BTW - I am a HUGE fan of your work!! icon_smile.gif

My very first cake was for a Mardi Gras theme - guess what - purple and green. Well, the purple resembled more of a blue. I agree that the difficulty is there and a hard color. But with no experience I just wrote the wrong color to inexperience - maybe I was a little too hard on myself.

I just checked, and I have at least 8 (!) cakes this year that are some shade of purple, light or dark, with 2 of my newest 3 pending orders having purple in their colors. And most require lavender GP flowers. Thank goodness I can ORDER those.

For the last flowers I had to make lavender, I ended up having to spray them with that Wilton color spray. Which worked great, I should add. My violet (Wilton) GP turned blue, and I mean BLUE like the color of a C&H powdered sugar bag, no idea why, and a second new container of color didn't do much better, so I sprayed them with the mist and they worked, but Agh what a PAIN. Now I have whole CAKES requiring the dreaded *p* word.

And I tried to talk them out of the dark solid black-purple cake. It's gorgeous, and yes, they still want that and nothing else... oh joy
