Hi everyone:

I'm looking for a specific chocolate mold. I need a 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.5" (approx. 30mm x 30mm x 30mm) plastic tray of cavities for chocolate. It doesn't have to be those exact specs but just a perfect cube between 1.5"- 2" in L x W x H. I have a large order for square chocolate pops. I tried to use the silicone ice cube tray but they are not a perfect square so I tried eyeing it in the cube silicone, that was fine but they were difficult to remove and also didn't have a glossy finish like the plastic molds give when the choc. is removed. The other problem with the silicone is that they catch every little dust particle, small hairs in the air that you never knew were there and show up very easily on light colored chocolate.

I even found a place receommended by Karekes Bacedeco.com called Tomric Systems. Tomric systems makes custom chocolate molds.
This is what they told me:

Your request was forwarded to me. I would be happy to put together pricing for you. I only have one question. Are you looking to have a logo or anything engraved into the top surface of the square? Also, I would like to let you know that We cant make a perfect cube as the sides of the piece need to tapered in order to release. This means the Top surface will be smaller than the base. The dimensions of the final piece would be around 30mm (L) x 30mm (W) at the base and the top would be 23 mm (L) x 23mm (w).

I hope this makes sense and I look forward to hearing from you.

Anyhow, am I out of luck or does anyone have any ideas? I had no idea it would be so impossible to find a square mold! I just need a tray of perfectly cube molds in around the dimensions I listed. I guess if I have to do the silicone I'll do it but would rather go with the plastic if anyone knows of where to find hard to find molds.

Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!

Can you pour the chocoate into a dish to the depth required, score the chocolate before it sets completely, snap it apart, and smooth the sides with a warm knife?

Thanks everyone for their replies.

Kathik- thanks for those links. Those molds have the right length and width but not height unfortunately.

I'll keep looking. I may have to just go with the dimensions Tomric sys gave me.

Update:

Another mold company(not the first one that can't do it) sent me this e-mail today:

That is a Cabrellon standard mold, Art. 11849. These molds are in polycarbonate.

To change the piece as you mentioned, there would be approx. $2,000 tooling charge and a minimum order of 100 molds at about $8.00 each.

These are rough prices. If you would like a formal quotation, please let me know.

....I really need this mold but there's got to be some cube molds out there somewhere that are cheaper than this! Ugh...getting frustrated!

Thanks Leah_s for taking the time to give me those links. icon_smile.gif

I've come across those molds in my feverish searching but I need a perfect cube with close to the dimensions of 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.5" and with no design on it.

This doesn't give the dimensions of each cube, but it says it makes a perfect cube
http://tovolo.com/prod/uten/sil/ice/icetrays.htm

this is 1.5 inches

if i'm remembering correctly, as long as you don't use it for soap it's food safe

Thanks a bunch Mirda. I'm trying not to go the silicone route. I'd like to find a plastic mold. I've tried the silicone mold which I got from bakedeco already in the 1.5" cube dimensions. The chocolate comes out much less shiny and I noticed it collects dust particles and small hairs from the air very easily which doesn't look very attractive or edible. Maybe I'm doing something wrong there but I cleaned and dried it very well beforehand. It just seems like these little particles have an affinity for silicone. The other thing is I'm filling the cavities after I've coated them with chocolate. It's very difficult to coat silicone I'm finding because the silicone is flexible so that makes it very hard to work with that way. Then when I try to release the chocolate after it hardens the pushing makes the chocolate coating crack.

This is for a long term project otherwise I would just suck it up with the silicone...

I'll keep looking, I really don't want to pay $2,000 for a tool fee and then $800 minimum for production of 100 molds. I hope it won't come to that so I'll keep looking. If anyone has any more suggestions, I'd love to hear them! icon_smile.gif Thanks!

Have you tried the Wilton brown cube pan that people are using to make sugar cubes? it's about 1 1/2" square. I think they use them to make brownie squares. I know Michaels carries them. Just a thought.

Did you try Spinning Leaf? http://www.spinningleaf.com/products/index.php Their recent email had two molds for sale (the peace sign & party) that said they were customer requests. Maybe they would be able to make for you.

Also, their cookie molds have straight sides and they come out of the molds just fine. (Unless it's because they are round.)

Good luck in with your project.

I have several truffle & candy molds from spinning leaf, they are a breeze to get out. I love those molds! And their customer service is wonderful! They also told me that there soap molds are fine to use for candy as well. But you could only use it for candy, once soap has been molded with it, it's unusable for foods.

Thanks guys. I couldn't find any cube molds on spinning leaf and they also e-mailed that they don't carry anything like that. I did find a much more reasonable priced custom mold company. She's going to charge me around $250 plus $7 per tray for the cubes. Anyhow, I'm very excited about this because another company wanted $2,000 plus a minimum order of 100 trays at $8 tray. The latter company wasn't very helpful with giving me options to reduce the price so I'm glad I came across this company that is. If anyone wants their company info, I'd be happy to give it.

Thanks again everyone! icon_smile.gif

Did you try chefrubber?.com? They make the polycarb molds and have great products. I've order from them and was very happy with both their products and service.
