If you are trying to get red in buttercream icing add pink color first and get it dark, then add red. I use either Wilton no taste red or Ameri color super red. In fondant you can purchase already colored red and that is usually pretty dark, at least in Satin Ice. I hope this has helped you.

Get true red instantly with chefmaster liqua gel color (same goes for black). You use very little and there is no bad taste and no waiting for it to intensify.
How do you achieve the red color when decorating? Mine always turns out pink. HELP!
To get red, I open up all my reds - Christmas Red, Holiday Red, Flame Red, Chinese Red, Red-Red, etc. and I use some from all of those. I then get red! If it shoujld get a bitter taste (as some dark colors can), I add a touch of clear corn syrup.
If you look at my pics, and see the Detroit Pistons photo on pg. 2 you can see an example of my red frosting.
I hope that helps.
