I am trying to search on here but coming up with nothing. Are there gloves, like made out of silicone to use while working with the blown sugar? Ones we can wear while trying to shape the items?? Or is it best to use bare hands?? and how long do you wait to try to pick it up after making it? I am wondering Where do I get the gloves from? Thanks

When I was making sugar bubbles last time I wore a double layer of vinyl gloves. Not sure about any special gloves though

I don't know of any "silicone" gloves.

Generally, you would use latex gloves that aren't powdered. You can buy nitrile gloves (latex free, but not silicone), but they're much more exonesive.

I use the latex gloves over a pair of the thin white cotton gloves that are used in chocolate making (about $1/pair at the cake deco store). It keeps the heat out and leaves your fingers flexible.

Many of the "old timers" who work sugar can do it bare handed. They have no sensation in their fingertips anymore. Truth is, the oils in your hands don't improve the quality of the sugar, so working in latex gloves--again, not the powdered type-- is a plus in more ways than one.

I have to do to bare handed... I tried with gloves when we were first learning in school and I just need the "feel" of the sugar to get it right... the gloves just get in the way for me.

May I ask, how do you know when you can pick it up without burning your hands? How long do you wait? Or do you just deal with blisters?? LOL> I hope that dont happen to you! Thanks, Kathyt

Well I will say I learned the hard way... you just start to know when it looks like its ready to be picked up, but there's no firm answer, because it will depend on the room temperature, as well as the type of surface you are pouring on (I pour onto a silpat, but is that silpat on a wooden table, a stainless table, a marble counter, etc. All these things will affect it). I use the silpat to fold the sugar onto itself after its cooled slightly and then when it looks ready, I pick it up and start working. It's still quite hot, but even prior to school I have always had asbestos hands lol. Some people do prefer gloves, I just can't work without FEELING what I am doing.
