Hi everyone ,

I was wondering on how I go about this , I have a Laptop cake due for the 18th ,I"m ok with the design but its the back piece that is troubling me . Do you use cakeboard covered in fondant or do you use a different material for this ?

I would say you would use what ever looks the most like the back piece. I'm assuming you mean the top piece that you lift up and your screen is there. I would use something stable, and non edible, like styrofoam. I don't really like using non-edibles, but when you are talking about skinny/thin pieces that have to stand open or up on it's side, you are asking for trouble. If you use edible materials, due to the surface mass, and gravity, it is more likely to fold in on it's self. Anything thin on the sides but wide across, will want to buckle. Therefore, since the amount of edible material would be minor, then I would use something non-edible and much more stable that can hold it's shape. I would rather have a non-edible part on my cake, than a edible piece that is unrecognizable because it crumbled. So I would use styrofoam and carve it into what ever shape it needs to be. Probably square because lap tops are generaly square, for the most part.
