I have not been doing cakes for very long and all the cakes I have done have been unpaid cakes for friends. I have had a lot of requests from other people who have seen my cakes at parties, so now I would like to extend the cake hobby and start doing paid cakes icon_eek.gif . I even had a call today from a party store who would like to refer work to me. I cannot jump straight in as my application is in with the right authorities regarding legalities, but as soon as all of that has been sorted out I am good to go.

Where I live, small island, there are not many people who do cakes and those who do generally do sheet cakes or character pan cakes. I like doing fondant covered sculpted cakes, and I do bake from scratch which is also unusual around here. So I would like a business name which makes me stand out as original and more upmarket. The ideas I had are:

Couture Cakes (know someone here has a similar name, but my friend came up with it.)

(The) Bespoke Baker. This is my favorite, but not sure if people understand what bespoke means.

Creative Cakes

What do you all think? If you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate input and help.

What part of the Caribbean do you live in? Could you do something French-themed? icon_confused.gif

i went though a ton of names as well. i ended up with my grandfathers old nickname which everyone asks hey whats....(not going to say the name cause im not legal-nor have i sold more then 1 cake). and then i have to explain what the name means. sooooo my advice is pick something meaningful that doesnt need to be explained. like if your name is susie then done pick john smiths bakery cause then everyone will ask whos john smith.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I am not in French speaking Caribbean so unfortunately cannot go for glamourous French sounding name. The other problem is that the phone book is full of Tropical this and Island that, or else I would agree it would be a good idea, especially since I would like to appeal to the destination wedding tourists. My husband suggested the Caribbean Cake Queen icon_lol.gif , but I am afraid I may upset a few locals choosing that name as I am an expat.

But keep 'em coming, got to get a name one way or another.

Alright, for those out there wondering like me, I'll be the silly one and ask--what does bespoke mean? icon_redface.gif

Glad you asked, because it just confirmes my suspicions that it would not work as a business name. Bespoke means made to order, custom made, made to measure. The term is usually used in tailoring. It is possibly more of a UK term.

Just out of curiosity, is it "fraudulent" to use "Bakery" in your business name if you bake out of home? Just so you know, where I live you can legally bake from home, but would you feel cheated if you knew it was not a commercial bakery?

Claudine1976, like the Blue Sea suggestion - maybe Blue Sea Bakery?

It's legal in Iowa too if you bake from your home. People always comment that i have quite the little bakery where a kitchen should be. I don't think using bakery in the name would be bad at all.
