I really really really want to get all of Sugarshack's DVDs but I can only afford one or two (that's pushing it) right now. I am wondering which one should I get? I am doing a couple of topsy turvys in two weeks and one in June that is my first wedding cake. So I was thinking that I should get the topsy turvy one. I also really want to get the buttercream one because I need alot of help with smooth buttercream too. But the fondant one is equally as important in my eyes to get as the buttercream one... See my problem??

So, does the topsy turvy dvd go over the some of the same stuff as the fondant dvd? If they are similar I don't want to get both right now. I eventually want them all, but right now I only want to get what I need now. Would I be ok with just getting the buttercream and topsy turvy dvds now? Or would yall recommend getting them in a different order?

Thank you!!

I would get them in order. I have all three.

Buttercream
Fondant
Topsy Turvey (you need the buttercream and fondant as a prerequisite to this one).

Just my opinion. All three DVDs are fabulous by the way and if you don't have the tools, you can order them from her to go with the lessons.

The topsy turvy and fondant DVDs are not the same. Yes the BC is very important because if your BC isn't smooth the fondant wont be smooth. The fondant one shows how to roll, apply and smooth fondant effortlessly. The topsy turvy shows how to carve and stack the topsy turvy as well as how to use ganache under fondant. Each has a different purpose and is very valuable.

I have them all!!!

Ok if you are doing Topsy Turvy I would defintely get that one first. (she uses a bit different method of icing in that one vs. the buttercream)

The second choice if you can get two - Is your wedding cake going to be buttercream and or stacked?? I love Sharon's buttercream video so I think I would go there next. The stacking one is great if you are doing a tiered cake and have had problems or issue or you are just unfamiliar with the process including delivery (she gives good tips of that too).

If you go to her site there are little previews also. Here is the topsy one:

I have all her videos and even though I do way more fondant work, I love her buttercream video and the boxes and bows video. Those are my faves. If you are doing a topsy turvy cake and have no experience in it, I'd recommend that video. Oh by the way y'all, her new DVD went on sale last night! icon_lol.gif

Have you checked the how to videos on YouTube? That's where I first saw the previews for Sugarshack's videos (which I eventually want to get.) There is an excellent 8.5 minute topsy turvy tutorial from Janellscakes. Maybe you could see if that's enough to get you through the two upcoming cakes you have, and you could buy one of the other Sugarshack DVDs first.

I have them all and would recommend them all. She has a new one out but has web site problems which is delaying it being sold. According to her blog there are more to come.

The Buttercream DVD is excellent! I too, would like to have every DVD that Sharon makes. Maybe you could get the topsy turvy one for now - and in the meantime, Edna de La Cruz has some wonderful tutorials on her website that might help with smoothing icing and stacking.

Here's her site: www.designmeacake.com

Hope this helps!

I have them all - but I have acquired them slowly - I got the topsy turvy dvd first, just like you I had a wedding cake to do that was topsy turvy. So I would really recommend getting this one - very, very helpful.

If you can get 2 I would purchase the buttercream one next - its amazing. Since I have purchased that dvd my icing looks awesome. I did a cake for a friend and everyone thought the buttercream was fondant because it was so smooth.

Good Luck - you'll never regret getting her DVDs

Oh wow, thank you all!! I was hoping I didn't need to really get them in order. I think I will go with the topsy turvy and buttercream prob, then get the others later. Thanks for the advice!!

I went on to order the new ones today, but I'm having a hard time justifying the cost!! I have all 6 of her DVDs (buttercream, fondant, stacking, boxes and bows, topsy turvy and design gallery), but $36 for sheet cakes is a little rough :-/ Then $9 for the bonus and $8 for shipping. I just dont know. I LOVE all of her other ones, though, and I'm sure it's worth it. Just a bit of sticker shock, I guess!

Yeah its a lot of money - I thought the same thing. But it does go through a lot of technique. Run-in sugar technique (right on the cake), royal icing/color flow, two tone buttercream, chocolate tranfers, Frozen Buttercream Transfers, Air brushing tehcniques. The $9.00 DVD has a fun new border.

I bought them and feel like I learned alot - its sheet cakes - and I'll probably never do those but the info was good.

Time totally about 5 hours.

Hello,

One question is it worth to buy the bonus dvd?

I'd definitely buy the bonus DVD -- I had a class with her last year and she was talking about releasing a bonus DVD at some point to give more profits to the foundation she supports (I forget the name of it but there's more info on her website). She already gives a portion of all her sales to them but she wants to do more. In that respect I have no problem helping out! icon_biggrin.gif

I also have all her dvds (except the sheet cake), and I have gained the most valuable info from the buttercream dvd. All of them are great, but I guess it depends on what type of cake you would do the most of. My buttercream cakes have improved so much since I've been using her techniques! I did a cake last week & no one could believe that it was buttercream. She does donate a portion of the dvd profits to charity so that decreases the sticker shock a lot for me. Also, it's like paying for a well taught class that you can pause, rewind, & play over & over.

yes I wanted to order them too but I also think is a lot of money for me $36 for sheet cakes. and then pay extra for the second I think is like 8 or 9 dlls.

Think about it! I don't know where else you can go and pay only $36 for 5 hours of professional instruction covering multiple decorating techniques, which you can review later anytime you wish! A 1-day class would cost a couple hundred dollars without the option of rewind! icon_smile.gif I just ordered both new DVD's to add to my Zambito collection and can't wait to get them! Enjoy!

As a hobby baker who never sells any cakes, I feel like it is still worth every penny that you pay for her DVDs. She goes very slow and explains her techniques in great detail. I will be ordering her sheet cake dvd with the bonus dvd and her boxes and bows dvd this week to complete my set!

Good luck with your topsy-turvy cake! Those are fun!

The buttercream one was a great one for me to start off with, and then go with the fondant or the stacked cakes one. I didn't think I would get much out of the Topsy Turvy one, because I don't do many carved caked, but I did find a lots of valuable information on it as well. I would love to get her newest ones, but will have to wait! Her DVD's are great and I am always recommending them to friends!

Happy Baking! Sandi
