For those of you who have done a Topsy Turvy Cake using the covered styrofoam wedges between layers:

Did you cut your own wedges? How do you determine the size in relation to the cake tiers

What did you use to secure your cake tier to the wedge beneath it?

How did you handle center support?

Thank for your help. I have searched the articles/forums and can't find what I need. Everything seems to address the other style (carved) topsy cake. I am making a 3 tier cake in this style next week

I've done a few of these. We made the wedges ourselves using styrofoam dummies - some styrofoam dummy providers will also cut them for you. I deliver these unassembled and stack them at the venue. I also had someone pick one up and showed them how to stack them when they got it home with no problems. I cut a piece of non skid shelf liner and place it on top of the wedge and then the next tier gets placed on top of that. Hope that helps!

I cut my own from 2" foam, so my gap is'nt a big as some but I do it at about a 45degree angle.
I cut them about 2-3" smaller then the cake sitting on top. Then I attach a cardboard cake circle cut to the same size on top and bottom and cover with fondant. I use royal as my glue and dowel down the center (center of gravity, may not always be the center of the actual cake). I deliver already assembled with no probs.
I have to do one for Friday and this is how I'm doing it.

CakeMommyTx did you cut the styrofoam with an exacto knife or is there a better way?

I bought a cheapy bread knife at Walmart, works really good.
I saw on a cake challenge (I think Ulitimate Cake Off) someone heating a knife with a blow torch and slicing through the foam like butter , been wanting to try that .
But for now the bread knife works fine.
