While making the fondant stars that go on wires do you stick the wire in the middle of the star or do you make 2 stars and stick them together and how is it done? Thanks!

I make the star thick like 1/4 of an inch or thicker and skewer the star on with a bit of piping gel to hold it and dry.

There was an identical post a day or two ago and 2 CC'ers suggested cutting 2 stars out of gumpaste, putting 20 gauge wire in between, sticking together (a bit of water to glue it), then letting it dry. I'm going to try that.

I've done it both ways. It seems to me that the 2 together is a little more stable. At least when I did it. icon_lol.gif

i always cut the stars about 4-5 mm thick, make a small hook at the end of 28 gauge wire, dip in the glue and then thread the wire (not hook end ) very gently into the star and pull untill the hook is about the center of the star. lay the star down to dry.
you must make sure the hook is very tiny. i have always done it this way and have never had a problem. if the star is to thick i find it is very heavy for the wires and it looks nicer if you can do it as thin as possible without the wire showing. sometimes if the wire has shown i have stuck another smaller star on top in an accent colour and they look great. hope this helps. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I don't like the bump in the middle of the star that one sees when using this method. I roll my fondant a little thicker as others have described and insert the wire up the center using a glue made from dissolved gum paste. Very stable.

Could you explain more about the "glue"? Thanks!

I make the stars a bit thicker and heat the end of the wire with a flame (lighter) and immediately insert into the star. The heat from the flame makes the wire so hot that it melts the fondant or gumpaste, the wire slides right into the star and when the fondant or gumpaste cools it forms its own glue...very easy...

Donna: "glue" is generally made from gumpaste dissolved in hot water. Dissolved to a glue-like consistency, this mixture makes a great adhesive for all kinds of projects including gumpaste flowers, fondant/gumpaste figures, holding wires inside fondant cutouts (such as stars as mentioned) and cutouts to the sides of cakes --just to name a few uses. Once made, if you seal it tightly and keep it in the fridge, it will last for a good bit (I've used mine for more than a month when I make a batch.)

HTH!
