I am a secretary by day but happen to have the day off. So, I'm using it to bake my cakes due Saturday. Baking during the day...what a novelty!!! I'm getting giddy thinking about the fact that I'll be able to watch Survivor AND go to bed at a decent hour tonight!

LOL - I know what you mean - I have two little ones and most of my baking/decorating happens after they're in bed. We actually installed a television in the kitchen so I wouldn't miss my favorite primetime shows - lol. I never thought I'd be a t.v. in the kitchen woman! Have fun baking in the daylight!

Hi,

I, too, am a night-time baker/decorator seeing that I have 3 kids under the age of 5. It's such a treat when someone is over to watch the kids and I can get my baking done in the daytime! icon_smile.gif

I'm a hobby baker, work full time and teach Wilton classes. It never fails when someone wants or needs a cake for Saturday I have class that Thursday evening so it makes for a really long night. I can't bake ahead and freeze since I don't have the freezer room for it.

I actually turned down a wedding cake in May because I was afraid with work, classes and birthdays/holidays that month I would be run ragged.

I have two kids too...6 and 3. I find that it is much easier to wait until they are in bed to even start cake work. Of course that means on a cake night I'm always up until 1:00 or 2:00. I was thinking about teaching Wilton courses and have submitted an app, but think I'd have to push to find somewhere to teach them since we don't have a Michael's or HL here. The more I think about it, the more I think I'll just wait on that venture!

Do you have JoAnn's or I think the other is Garden Ridge there?

I don't have kids, but almost two years I babysat my friends daughter (from 6 weeks old to two years of age). I am amazed at how women with kids get things done around the house and how those of you can create such lovely cakes with them under foot. I know it is different when you have them in your house with their things, and you have a set routine, but still. Mother's are so talented!

I actually just set my Wilton class schedule for the next few months. This month I have a Thursday night and Saturday class 2-4 and then next month I will add in a Saturday morning 11-1. When I figure the schedule I have to keep in mind that the date I am setting is for the next four months, so they can continue though all the classes on the same day/time.

Had I agreed to that cake I would have a possibility of two classes on Saturdays, possibily birthday cake since my nephew's birthday falls during the week of that weekend when she wanted the cake.

I agreed to a wedding and groom cake back last summer, so I knew ahead of time I was doing it. Well a month before the wedding I got the full time job, then come to find out I forgot to look at the Michaels/Wilton demo schedule and I had a demo on the same day. To top it off the wedding was in another town, about 30mins from here. Thankfully she was understanding and I was able to deliever the cake that morning, made it back to town in time to go do the demo, and I have a boss (my father) that was understanding enough to give me part of that Friday off to work on cakes.

After that experince, when she said May, I was like two holidays, two birthdays, and demo at Michaels during the same month, nope it just isn't worth it.

I enjoy doing cakes, but I keep it as a hobby because I like to do it on my own terms. I learned long ago, I don't want to do a cake every weekend. Plus when you work about 48 hours a week, plus another 6-12 at another job, you miss that free time when you plan cakes in it all the time. Or atleast I did.

The only place I can imagine that would be a possibility for teaching is the community college since we have no craft stores. So, I would either have to push for the college or drive up to 30+ miles. If I only have time to do one or the other, I think I'd prefer making cakes over teaching!

There is Wilton classes tought through Comminity Education, but I don't know how you get into that myself.

I really enjoy teaching, gives me my weekly icing fix with out having to break out the mixer at home. Plus it is always great when students get it. I think I am cut out more for the teaching, besides Wedding cakes aren't my favorite cakes to make. icon_wink.gif
