Hi there! I would probably try to use something other than the brown sugar as it has such a bold taste and may melt or get sticky if exposed to humidity - even after being in a fridge. I would suggest crushed up teddy grahams. They work perfectly. Just use your Cuisinart to crush, or even put in a baggie and crush with a mallet. They taste good and seem to meld well with typical cake flavors. Hope this helps! : )

Welcome Jayne -

You can brush your cake board with sugar glue and then sprinkle brown sugar or raw sugar or crushed brown rice or crushed plain sweet biscuits or crushed dry biscuits.

By mixing a few of the above it gives your *sand* a textured effect and a more depth to the colour.

I usually use graham cracker crumbs for sand. If you want darker/wetter look, you can mix some melted butter in it (like for making a crust) and then you can mold it a bit.

I have used a mixture of brown sugar and graham cracker crumbs. My clients seem to like it and it serves as it's own "glue" if you press it into place gently.

Raw sugar works really good... tack down with a thin bit of piping gel.

I think I've come up with the perfect sand: 1c white sugar, 1c brown sugar, 2-3 chocolate wafer cookies (or oreo cookies w/o the filling) & 2-3 ginger wafer cookies (or ginger snaps)...grind the wafers down to a fine crumble and mix with the sugars. It looks like real California sand (from the clean beaches, obviously icon_razz.gif)! You can see it on my Spongebob cake in my gallery here, as well as on my website.

Oh, and it'll keep for years in an air tight container.

I make a sand that should be everything you find in the UK. It looks very realistic and I even used it for a Sponge Bob cake myself. Vanilla wafers, graham crackers, brown sugar, white sugar, and just a bit of Oreo crumbs as well. These are just little bits of each. Place them in a food processor and pulse until it is a fine crumb resembling sand.

As well, if you do not have piping gel available, a light coating of corn syrup is better than using anything with a water base as the water content can cause sugars to dissolve.

I love using brownulated sugar.... you can find it by the brown sugar. It tastes like br. sugar, but is not gritty. I usually use a bit of clear piping gel and stick 'er down with that.

Hope that helps -
