Fondant Covered Cake Boards

K...I'm trying to work this out in my head before I actually do it but it's not really making sense. I'm sure it's very simple...but anyway...

Do you mask and cover your cake with fondant on a separate board and then place it on your fondant covered board? You can't very well mask a cake on a fondant covered board or you'd wreck the fondant on the board...right?

am I over thinking this????

if there's a thread about this already just point the way...I feel stupid even asking this because I'm sure it's very simple and straight forward.

I don't know what you are referring to as mask???? If you mean put bc down on the fondant covered board for the cake to be palce on then I believe thats right.

I place my fondant covered cake on my fondant covered cake board. Two completely different pieces. Does that help? My fondant covered cake is on a cakeboard cut to the exact size of the cake.

Masking is the process of covering your cake with BC before putting the fondant on.

Maybe I didn't word it right... if I want a fondant covered cake board for my cake to sit on...what's the process?
Cover the board and cake separately and then move the fondant covered cake to the fondant covered board and finish decorating?
OR cover the board with fondant, place the cake on it and somehow try to mask and cover it without damaging the board?
OR cover the board with fondant, mask the cake with BC, chill till the BC is hard and then place the masked cake on the fondant covered board and cover the cake with fondant?

OH!! ok...makes sense now. I was thinking I would have to place the cake on the fondant board with nothing underneath it.

I'm over tired, I totally forgot to do the cake separate from the board and now I have to try and mask the cake and cut the fondant without messing up the fondant on the bloody board! ARCH!! That'll teach me to pull an all nighter.

You would cover the cake board, then cover the cake and then put the cake on the covered cake board. icon_smile.gif

I cover the board....let it dry a few days. Add a foil covered board to the center and proceed with covering with icing/fondant. If the base were a colored fondant, I would mask it with something like wax paper or foil to keep the pdr. sugar from getting on it.

If it's dry you shouldn't mess the board up.

Oh...I know the process...I just forgot to do it! Everything turned out ok tho. I was very careful and there was very little minor damage to the green fondant on the board. Next time I'll do it the correct way and get the board covered early.
