Thanks to the CC'ers who gave me advice about this cake. It was a HUGE hit with the groom (he's a family friend) (he picked it up and danced around with it, playing it like a real guitar! He was a bit drunk! smile The sheet music on the cake board was his favorite artist. I photocopied music, made a collage, then covered foam core with it then covered in contact paper. The arm was foam core, strings are thread. Guitar itself is cake painted with food coloring in different shades to resemble wood. TONS of fun to do, but happy it's done. Thansk for all the tips.
It is absoutely fabulous, Wow you did an amazing job, Now I want to try one, Did you use buttercream or fondant? Because you were asking about buttercream, and it is so smooth, and what size pans did you use? sorry for all the questions. and again Awesome Job.
Wow!!!! I wish you lived closer -- I'd hire you to make one for my guitarist son. Heaven knows, I'll never have the nerve (nor the talent ) to make him one myself. Yours is fantastic!
Thanks to all - It was fondant, to answer your question. I brushed the sides and tops with brown wilton food coloring diluted with lemon extract. I used a stronger concentration for the sides. The streakiness made the woodgrain look. I baked the cake in a full sheet pan, torted and filled with buttercream which gave me the 5" height I needed for the realistic height of the cake. Then just carved it. Very surprised how easy and fast the whole project was, and of course happy the groom was so psyched!
